Position

Ranjit Walia heads the firm and is the Managing Counsel of Walia & Co. which he founded in 1997. Ranjit started his legal career as an Associate consultant with a major international law firm in New Delhi. While working there he advised large transnational companies on the legal and regulatory aspects of setting up business operations in India. Many of these companies had interests in the infrastructure sectors and included international airlines, technology, power, automobile, consumer and telecom companies. The firm has grown under his direction and leadership and enjoys the goodwill of its multinational and domestic clientele for providing proactive, practical,prompt and quality legal services. Ranjit heads the firm's Aviation, Corporate, Regulatory and Business Advisory practice. He regularly advises and represents multinationals seeking to enter India either by way of joint ventures or wholly owned subsidiaries and is involved in the drafting and negotiation of their agreements and the entire process of setting up their operations in India. He also advises and represents several domestic Indian companies on various business, commercial and legal issues. In addition to Corporate and Regulatory work, Ranjit is also an Aviation law expert. Ranjit has represented various foreign Aviation companies and airlines and has an in depth practical knowledge of the Aviation industry in India. His major achievements include successfully lobbying for an amendment to the Indian Aircraft Act and the Indian Aircraft Rules on behalf of a major European carrier, which involved interacting with various Indian authorities such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Airport Authority of India and Ministry of Civil Aviation. He has over 15 years experience in the aviation industry in India and has successfully handled various multi million dollar transactions for various aviation companies. He has also successfully assisted several international airlines in establishing their presence in India right from the stage of seeking an Operating Permit to assisting them in dealing with complex business related issues that the Indian business environment throws up. His expertise in the Aviation sector in India is well respected and he is often called upon to give his expert opinion by international and Indian news agencies and leading dailies. He has also advised the Airports Authority of India on issues relating to a transition to a satellite based CNS/ATM system that the Indian Government is proposing to implement. He has been a core group member of the Aviation Working Group of the the Confederation of Indian Industry and was recently nominated as an Aviation Law Expert Member of the Working Group of the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Cargo and Express Cargo infrastructure at airports. The recommendations of the Working Group, of which Ranjit was a key member, have been submitted to the Government which has now set up an Inter Ministerial group to implement them.

Career

Founded Walia & Co in 1997; prior to that worked with an International Law firm as an Associate Consultant. In 1997 Ranjit played a key role in effecting amendments to the Indian Aircraft Act and the Indian Aircraft Rules which permitted de-registration of foreign leased aircraft. He received commendation from the aviation industry and a major European Carrier whom he helped retrieve their aircraft pursuant to the amendment. Ranjit was a key adviser to the Airports Authority of India on issues relating to a transition to a satellite based CNS/ATM system. Ranjit was the lead Indian Member of a team which was working on the study project sponsored by the United States Trade Development Agency (TDA). Ranjit has been a core Member of the Aviation Working Group of the Confederation of Indian Industry in the past. More recently he was nominated as a as an Aviation Law Expert Member of the Working Group of the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Cargo and Express Cargo infrastructure at airports. The recommendations of the Working Group, of which Ranjit was a key member, have been submitted to the Government which has now set up an Inter Ministerial group to implement these recommendations.
