Among them, Caracas-based Pedro Saghy is representing Mayor La Algaida in an arbitration pertaining to a recollection of award following a breach of contract; Houston-based Mark Baker represented a Latin American oil producer in ICC arbitration concerning a joint operation agreement dispute. The firm’s US litigation bench increased significantly following the 2017 merger with Chadbourne & Parke, and the New York office now has 80 litigators, many of whom handle cross-border matters. The firm advised former JP Morgan executive Javier Martin-Artajo on criminal and enforcement proceedings brought by the DOJ, the SEC and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority concerning securities fraud. Another highlight was the firm’s work for BMW in multidistrict litigation concerning the recall of vehicles using Takata airbags. The team regularly represents companies from the energy, mining, manufacturing and transportation industries in claims arising from natural disasters, industrial accidents and environmental contamination. Led by Stephen Dillard and Jessica Farley, the team recently obtained partial summary judgment for Chevron Phillips Chemical in an MDL involving claims that groundwater was contaminated by underground storage tanks, which allegedly leaked gasoline containing methyl tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE). In other work, Mark Baker continues to represent Vicanay Cadenas against claims brought by Petrobras, a Brazilian energy corporation, alleging that a tether chain manufactured by Vicanay broke and caused $350m in damages to a production site in the Gulf of Mexico. Brett Young is another key figure; all named partners are based in Houston, unless otherwise noted.
