David Garson, Managing Partner

David Garson, Managing partner of Guberman Garson Segal LLP discusses how the firm is adapting to clients' changing needs.

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Guberman Garson Segal LLP from your competitors?

  • We have a presence globally, where our clients need us, with 1600 lawyers in 70 countries.
  • We care as much about our clients’ long term success as we do for the short term outcome of a project.
  • We speak the language of the boardroom and business, not just legalese.
  • We desire to win great clients and to make an impact on their businesses.
  • We have wide-ranging, in-depth experience and understanding of sectors, industries and markets.
  • We possess collective expertise available on a firm-wide basis.
  • We are one of the fastest growing immigration firm in Canada.
  • We present a tremendous opportunity to clients to take advantage of the integration of tax and immigration services, which is a unique seamless service that not many of our competitors can provide.

Which practices in your member firm do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

We specialize only in immigration law so we hope to grow and expand our capabilities in that area of law.

What is the main change you have made in your firm that will benefit clients?

The main change, more than anything else, is the expansion of our technological abilities to such a large extent that I believe it puts us ahead of our competitors in terms of what we can offer.

The staff we have hired are extremely accomplished and are specialists in their field.

How is technology changing the way you interact with your clients and the services you can provide them?

With technology, we can react quicker and in a more timely fashion. It allows us to proceed in a more efficient way that saves the client money and effort.

Many of our clients want to interact with us through a technological tool, in addition to email or a telephone call. We can still provide services in person, or via email or telephone but we also provide new ways for our client to interact with us via our technology.

Our clients are increasingly interested in document analysis and document automation tools. Significant efficiency gains can be achieved when tools are carefully matched to tasks, taking into consideration features and benefits of specific tools.

Can you give us a practical example of how you helped a client add value to their business?

Many clients engage us because they need solutions to their business challenges that consider both tax and legal issues. By providing an integrated service in collaboration with Deloitte Canada, we have been able to save these clients time and money by efficiently addressing their needs as one team, rather than multiple teams.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three year's time?

As our firm continues to grow, so will our expert workforce. We will have technology that is second-to-none. We aspire to be the world’s leading immigration law firm.
