Career

Rokeya is a partner and experienced child care lawyer. She qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and was called to the Bermuda Bar in 1992. She has been on the Law Society Children Panel since 1995 and joined Hanne & Co in 2015. Rokeya undertakes advocacy at all levels of court including in the High Court.

Rokeya has specialised in representing children and families since 1993. She has a depth of experience acting for parents and children in care proceedings, emergency and secure accommodation applications wardship proceedings and applications under the inherent jurisdiction including Deprivation of Liberty applications and applications opposing vaccination of young children. She also represents children in private law proceedings and parents in care proceedings who are located abroad.

Rokeya has expertise in proceedings involving non-accidental and fatal injury, physical and sexual abuse, gang affiliation, radicalisation and placement abroad. She is experienced in assessing children’s capacity within proceedings and representing older children on direct instructions.

Rokeya has recently acted for parents in two separate care proceedings where they have challenged the withdrawal of support services for a disabled child which directly jeopardised their ability to continue to care at home.

In recent years the majority of Rokeya’s practice has been representing children. In 2020 she was invited by Cafcass managers to provide training to new Guardians.
