About Us

The South East Legal Alliance (SELA) is a network of independent law firms advising clients on their business across South East Europe. The alliance members are among the top firms in their jurisdictions, providing the full range of legal and business services to national and international businesses.

Formally launched in October 2016, SELA has quickly gained recognition as a leading South East European legal network and is a partner of choice for many international law firms for cross-border deals in jurisdictions where they don’t have a presence. Recognised individually for their expertise and reputation in their own jurisdictions, the alliance offers clients a unified team with strong expertise in the countries of South East Europe, cross-border transactional experience and streamlined service.

SELA’s member firms are carefully selected for their reputation and track record of success, as well as for their in-depth knowledge of local laws, business and political environments, enabling the alliance to help clients successfully navigate the regional legal and business terrain. The lawyers in each of our member firms have broad experience across a range of industries and many of the lawyers have degrees from affluent US and European universities. With fluent English language capabilities, as well as proficiency in French, Spanish, Russian, German and Italian, our member firms boast specialised desks offering a full range of services in these languages.

Each jurisdiction is represented by a leading domestic full-service law firm, with in-depth knowledge of the local laws, customs and the judicial system, and is ideally placed to apprise clients on the business and political environment enabling them to successfully navigate the local legal and business terrain. SELA takes pride in its ability to provide clients with a unified approach to legal services and advisory and to provide an efficient and cost-effective service throughout South East Europe.

This is why great care is given to the application and selection process for member firm. SELA members are carefully selected based on strict membership criteria. Participation in the alliance is exclusive and by invitation only. Only well reputed and prestigious firms with excellent track records and substantial partner involvement are selected to join SELA. Each member has an in-depth understanding of their local practice and business habitat and a truly international perspective. Candidates selected for membership are carefully vetted and are then visited by the management board to evaluate if their firm values and culture are in line with SELA standards before they are accepted as members.

One of the key factors differentiating SELA from other international legal associations is the time and expense the member firms invest in managing their know-how. As a group, SELA makes every effort to have one scale of competency per level of fee-earner throughout the alliance, by utilizing an integrated approach to learning and development, clients can be sure that they will receive the same level of quality and legal and business services from each firm in the alliance.

SELA focuses on key areas where, as a group, the impact is greater than what individual firms would achieve alone. The group gathers together on a quarterly basis to develop and implement a joint strategy. The group routinely shares know-how and works together on a regular basis to ensure the regular and systematic exchange of professional information to facilitate and serve the needs of its client base.
