Career
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Maria Eugenia Ramirez is passionate about international law. In 2002, she joined our newly opened Miami office, where Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) was seeking bilingual lawyers to establish an International Arbitration practice. Maria Eugenia helped create and develop the practice, which over the years has grown exponentially not just in Miami but around the world.
Today, Maria Eugenia still focuses her practice on international arbitration, with an emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean. She has represented clients from El Salvador, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Argentina, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico with respect to contract, construction, and telecommunications disputes. She handles international arbitration matters in both English and Spanish before the International Centre for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association, the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
Maria Eugenia began her legal career in the litigation group of the largest law firm in Puerto Rico. She moved to the mainland United States in the hopes of working with more international clients, choosing Miami due to its proximity to Latin America. Her current practice allows her to travel all around Latin America and the world, an opportunity she did not have in previous positions.
Before entering private practice, Maria Eugenia worked for the Honorable Juan M. Pérez-Giménez, U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Puerto Rico, in San Juan. She also served as legal counsel and sat on the board of directors of the March of Dimes, Puerto Rico Chapter, also in San Juan. She is the only lawyer at Hogan Lovells licensed to practice law in Puerto Rico state courts.

Latin America: International firms > International arbitration
Hogan Lovells US LLP has a large number of international arbitration practitioners that are either dedicated to Latin America or have a primary focus on the region. Furthermore, it has an impressive background in the specialty and has developed a thriving investor-state practice, where it represents an even split of sovereigns and private entities. Commercial arbitrations are also a forte for the team, while infrastructure and energy cases are key segments for the practice. New York partner Oliver Armas is global head of international arbitration, fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and frequently acts in cases involving Latin America. Richard Lorenzo is regional managing partner for the Americas and is a recognised leader in international arbitration, having spent long periods in Latin America itself. Daniel González is the former global head of international arbitration and also has an impressive background in Latin America cases. Puerto Rico born Maria Ramirez is fully bilingual in Spanish and English, and a genuine Latin America specialist; she has represented clients in cases involving multiple Latin American jurisdictions. The team can also call on seasoned international arbitration practitioner Luis Enrique Graham in the firm’s Mexico office. All named individuals are based in Miami unless stated otherwise.
Latin America: International firms > City focus - Miami
Hogan Lovells US LLP has a long history in Miami with much of its practice having a Latin America emphasis. The Miami team is noted for energy and infrastructure projects in Latin America, along with international arbitration. Previously, the international arbitration practice was more centred on commercial arbitration, but the firm has increased its focus on investment treaty cases; the team represents sovereigns, quasi-sovereigns and investors. Richard Lorenzo is regional managing partner for the Americas and is a recognised leader in international arbitration, as is Daniel González, who was previously global head of international arbitration. Puerto Rican-born Maria Ramirez is an emerging talent in the international arbitration field and -like Lorenzo and González- a genuinely bilingual practitioner. The Miami office is also at the forefront of energy and infrastructure projects, along with sustainability and decarbonisation-related transactions. Jorge Diaz-Silveira is managing partner of the Miami office and leader of the Americas infrastructure, energy, resources and projects group; he has an extensive record in projects work in Central America, Ecuador, Chile and Colombia. José Valdivia is co-chair of the Latin America group and another experienced figure in energy and infrastructure projects.
