Hogan Lovells International LLP

Operating as part of a larger global platform, Hogan Lovells International LLP's Brussels team demonstrates particularly strong capabilities in behavioural and transactional antitrust matters involving industries such as TMT, consumer and luxury goods, shipping, and aerospace and government. One key figure is Salomé Cisnal De Ugarte, whose arrival from Crowell & Moring in 2017 was 'a real coup' for the firm', and who is leading the advice to Amway on competition issues related to physical and digital distribution, and horizontal agreements. De Ugarte is 'an extremely valuable addition to any antitrust team'. The group, which is led by 'highly knowledgeable expert' Christopher Thomas is experienced in representing clients in international cartel and abuse of dominance investigations, as well as merger reviews; it has 'a high level of dedication and responsiveness'. Thomas, in particular, is praised for having 'an outstanding ability to understand complex business processes and technical implications'. A cross-office team, including Thomas and senior associate May Lyn Yuen, represented Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines and Eukor in the long-running global maritime car carrier cartel investigations; this matter has been subject to over a dozen concluded or ongoing investigations worldwide. The team also acts for complainants and intervenors in behavioural matters; Thomas is working with associate David Dauchez to represent Lithuanian oil refinery Orlen Lietuva at the General Court of the EU as the intervening party in an appeal by Lithuanian state-run railway company Lietuvos gelezinkeliai of the decision by the European Commission to fine it for removing a railway track between the refinery and the Latvian border. In evidence of the firm's strengths in the defence sector, Falk Schöning and others assisted Orbital ATK with obtaining phase one clearance in the EU for its $9.2bn sale to Northrop Grumman. Counsel Gianni De Stefano is also a notable practitioner.
