Career

James was promoted to the partnership in January 2020 and is a key figure in the development and future of the practice in London.  For more than 10 years James has advised debt funds and investment banks on their investments in distressed situations and banks and corporates on all their restructuring needs.  His work covers debt and equity re-organisations (implemented consensually or using cram down procedures), refinancings, new money injections, enforcements and contingency planning.  He also advises on distressed M&A transactions and trading insolvencies.

Clients appreciate James’ level headed approach and commercial advice, his ability to manage complicated multi-stakeholder transactions and his highly focussed approach to deal execution.  The majority of James’ work is cross-border and involves complex capital structures.   He has significant experience in the retail, travel, casual dining, aviation, real estate, pharmaceuticals and logistics sectors and has a broad client base across the investment bank and debt fund community as well as close relationships with UK and European banks.

For a number of years he has been at the centre of some of the team’s most high profile transactions and his recent deal highlights include advising on Thomas Cook, Fairhold, Famar, Conviviality, Palmer & Harvey and Gaucho.

James Maltby  – Hogan Lovells International LLP

Hogan Lovells International LLP has ‘a very commercial approach and is focused on solving problems’ for an impressively broad stakeholder base that includes banks, funds, IPs and corporates. Consequently, the team has excellent knowledge of “what is market”, and is as comfortable handling complex capital structure financial restructurings and special situation mandates, as it is mid-market UK insolvency matters. Tom Astle  provides  ‘technical and high-quality advice’, which manifests itself in a broad array of restructuring and insolvency matters, including his recent lead role as part of a multi-disciplinary offering for the special administrators of FCA-authorised investment bank and wholesale broker Sova Capital. ‘Commercial and knowledgeable way beyond his years’, James Maltby  co-heads the team along with Astle and delivers advice ‘in a calm and collected manner’ for a creditor-focused client base that includes banks and private capital providers. Alex Kay  is also a key member of the team and has forged a particularly strong reputation for buy side investors and creditor committees in relation to emerging markets mandates – including a considerable amount with a Ukrainian nexus.
