Career

John Tillman advises clients on major commercial disputes, focusing particularly on cases involving financial transactions and litigation arising from insolvency and distressed situations. John also regularly advises on fraud and asset recovery exercises, from investigations through to litigation and enforcement. The majority of John’s cases have an international element, and he regularly advises on disputes involving multiple jurisdictions where cross-border coordination is critical.

John guides a wide range of clients, including banks, major corporates, pension schemes and insolvency practitioners, through some of the most complex and sensitive disputes with a focus in each case on his client’s strategic objectives. Recommended in various directories, John advised on many of the most significant disputes to arise from the credit crunch of 2007/2008, ranging from his work for insolvency practitioners on SIV defaults to advising BNY Mellon on a dispute concerning priority “flip” clauses in structured finance deals.

John also advised the United Kingdom pension scheme and the Pension Protection Fund as major creditors in the Nortel insolvency litigation, and has more recently been advising the administrators of Lehman Brothers Holdings PLC (In Administration). John has advised on three cases which have reached the UK Supreme Court, and regularly presents and publishes on litigation and insolvency related topics.
