Tom is a European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney who primarily handles Mechanical, Electrical and Software patents. Tom also handles European oppositions and infringement opinion work, as well as registered design filings focusing on technical products. Tom joined the London office of Ablett & Stebbing in 2003, becoming a partner of that firm in 2010, before joining Lewis Silkin in 2019.


Tom has an Honours degree in Biomaterials and a Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Birmingham University. Tom also has a strong background in electronics and processing, having started his career at a firm of Patent Attorneys in Japan handling patent applications for the consumer electronics industry.

Housing a team of trade mark attorneys and litigators, Lewis Silkin manages international trade mark portfolios and handles a broad range of prosecution matters, while also representing clients in cross-border trade mark disputes. The team’s client roster, which includes start-ups and SMEs, UK and Ireland-based companies, as well as overseas investors, has expanded since its merger with specialist IP firm Forde Campbell in Belfast. Following the departure of Dominic Farnsworth to Locke Lord LLP in January 2022, Tom Gaunt leads the team and Nick Bowie, who handles online enforcement mandates and domain name disputes, was promoted to partner in April 2022.

The patent prosecution practice at Lewis Silkin has seen an increase in the number filings at the EPO, in addition to opposition and appeal proceedings, across the technology, manufacturing, consumer goods, life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors. The firm’s Hong Kong desk grew its international offering to UK clients filing patent applications and the firm also consolidated its IP offering in Northern Ireland by merging with specialist firm Forde Campbell at the beginning of 2022. Tom Gaunt leads the practice and handles EPO oppositions and infringement opinion work arising out of the mechanical, electrical and software sectors.
