Position

Mike  is a Partner in  the Employment Department at Leigh Day.

Mike  deals with all aspects of employment and discrimination law. He represents employees and senior executives in claims before the Employment Tribunal and on appeal. As well as his discrimination litigation work, Mike also advises on contracts, restrictive covenants and bonus issues.

Mike  has expertise in advising senior executives, with a focus on discrimination claims for those working in the legal sector  and banking and finance.

 

 

 

 

Career

Prior to qualification in 2009, Mike worked in trade unions for a decade.  Post qualification he oversaw multiple important Employment cases including on appeal and up to the European Court of Justice.   He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Industrial Law Society for four years between 2013-2017.

Mike’s recent work on discrimination claims in the Tribunal  against several major international banks drew significant media attention as did his work on behalf of Foreign Office  whistleblower Maria Bamieh including the high value settlement achieved on her behalf.

Leigh Day provides an end-to-end service to individuals engaged in employment disputes. High-profile matters, including equal pay claims against ASDA and ongoing sex discrimination claims against Sainsbury’s, are significant both in terms of their magnitude but ademonstrating team heads Lauren Lougheed and Linda Wong‘s expertise in litigation and equal pay disputes. The firm also regularly represents senior executives in the private and public sphere, acting for unfair dismissal claims including discrimination, victimisation and mistreatment aspects. Co-head Mike Cain concentrates on these senior executive issues, with a nationwide practice focused on the financial and legal sector, including the South and London. The team is co-headed by Nigel Mackay, who regularly represents senior executives in Employment Appeal Tribunal claims, and Emma Satyamurti, who advises on complex pregnancy and maternity discrimination cases. Other key team members include ‘exceptional’ Mike Cain, who works on claims under whistleblowing legislation, and Annie Powell, who handles constructive dismissal claims in academic contexts.
