Hugh joined BrookStreet des Roches in April 2014 bringing over 20 years experience in commercial and intellectual property law. He has significant experience in a wide range of business sectors and for clients operating in different jurisdictions. His range of experience of commercial transactions is extensive, particularly in relation to the intellectual property aspects of merchandising, franchising, licensing, distribution, advertising, sponsorship, endorsement, media and entertainment law. Hugh has led teams conducting intellectual asset management projects for clients, including carrying out intellectual property audits/due diligence and developing IP strategies to complement and enhance clients’ general business plans and the management of their intellectual property generally. He has also advised clients in relation to the distribution of entertainment products and the aggregation, licensing and supply of digital content. Hugh also acts for businesses in relation to the management and exploitation of their IP rights worldwide. His advice includes formulating brand management strategies, the clearance of rights, international franchising and licensing projects and infringement issues.

The 'brilliant team' at BrookStreet des Roches is noted for its broad base of work, with particular strength in the food, engineering, technology and healthcare sectors. Head of corporate Paddy Gregan routinely handles significant transactions affecting the food production sector, notably advising on PD Hook Group’s acquisition of Bernard Matthews turkey business following the insolvency of the latter. Gregan also acted for Nuffield College on the formation of a public-private corporate joint venture between Nuffield and Oxford City Council to develop a major £200m mixed-use scheme in Oxford’s West End. Hugh Tebay heads the commercial side of the practice and recently assisted Smeg UK with the drafting and negotiation of logistics and warehousing agreements. Gayle Curry joined from Blake Morgan LLP to head the practice's healthcare transactional offering.

BrookStreet des Roches' team is experienced in commercial and contentious IP matters, with particular specialisms in franchising, software and app development and licensing transactions, and data security, management and licensing. Significant clients of the practice include Whittard, Toni & Guy and McDonald’s Restaurants. Practice head Hugh Tebay has ‘outstanding legal acumen’ and is ‘highly trusted and very well respected’. Tebay and senior associate Claire Jacques acted for Atomo Diagnostics on the licence of its intellectual property rights in its range of diagnostic kits for a number of diseases and illnesses to licensees based in Europe, India, South Korea, the US and the UAE. Health sector IP expert Gayle Curry joined the team from Blake Morgan LLP in August 2017. Senior consultant Peter Moody is also noted.
