Plexus Law

Work Department

Carl is a Partner in the Casualty Team based in the Leeds office.

Carl has been with Plexus for over seventeen years and specialises in defending Employers’ Liability and Public Liability claims on behalf of insurers. In addition to work on behalf of various insurer clients Carl receives direct instruction from a number of companies direct such as Pizza Express, Kelly Communications and the Azzurri Group (comprising Zizzi and Ask restaurants) for claims within their self-insured retention or for which they have no insurance provision. Carl’s practice includes the whole range of EL/PL claims including occupational stress and harassment. Carl is routinely instructed in high value personal injury cases by a range of clients yet still retains a diverse case load with a particular emphasis on liability disputes and maintains an enviable record of Trial wins and Discontinuances.

Carl’s practice has more recently extended into Regulatory matters acting for companies and individuals facing prosecution by the HSE or the ORR for breach of Health and Safety legislation, a natural outgrowth from and accompaniment to the Employers’ Liability work Carl has undertaken for many years.

Carl also undertakes work on behalf of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in respect of insolvent insurers where the FSCS may have to step in. To date Carl has undertaken such work in respect of the following insolvent insurers: Gable Insurance Ag, Berliner Versicherung Ag and ERIC. Carl has an in-depth knowledge of the intricacies involved in such work particularly around the requirements to obtaining FSCS protection and issues arising from that protection often being incomplete, resulting in companies and individuals having less than full insurance cover and on occasion no cover at all. Carl has undertaken work on a direct instruction basis for a number of such companies and individuals who have found themselves without any insurance provision given the insolvency of their insurer.

During Carl’s time with Plexus he spent ten years working in-house with one of the firms major insurer clients gaining a valuable insight into and understanding of the needs and priorities of both insurers and their policyholders, both corporate and individuals.

Carl has also conducted in-house training for Plexus and for clients in his areas of expertise.
