Yiannis Pantelidis, Partner
Yiannis Pantelidis, founder and partner at PD Law Offices, explains how the firm has become one of the leading law firms in insurance law and dispute resolution. What do you see as the main points that differentiate [law firm name] from your competitors?
One of the qualities that distinguish our firm from other practices is our established courtroom experience. Our litigation team handles approximatively 200 court hearings on a yearly basis, which makes us one of the most prolific law firms in Greece in the area of dispute resolution. Thanks to the abundance of our litigated cases, PD Law Offices has enriched the Greek jurisprudence with ground-breaking decisions, all of which in favour of our clients, in the area of civil torts, contract disputes, consumer protection laws, life insurance investments, distribution agreements, pharmaceutical liability, employment law, etc.
We firmly believe that a lawyer cannot efficiently advise on any legal matter, without having acquired a profound understanding of the client’s business and, above all, a strong feel of the world of court practice. With the exception of basic distinctions regarding their duties, most of our lawyers cover both contentious and non-contentious work, so that our clients can profit from our combined experience. Our undeniable experience in litigation is precisely what makes our advisory work no less than exceptional, and this is what differentiates us from most of our competitors.
Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?
In the current competitive environment of our country’s resurgent economy, there is a general focus on tourist development. We believe that we shall continue to witness the launch of large-scale infrastructure projects, privatizations, sales of real estate assets, concessions of the exploitation of marinas, etc, which will involve the full spectrum of corporate and commercial legal work and are likely to give rise to a great deal of commercial disputes.
We have also noted the introduction of the the new compulsory mediation procedures in civil and commercial claims, which marks a significant change in our civil procedure rules. With an ever-growing team of accredited mediators, our firm has taken steps to welcome this new practice, which we believe will rapidly gain ground.
What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients?
We recently shared with our long-term clients a digital claims management platform, which we use and update regularly. This has been a great benefit to our clients as it has facilitated the process of information and reporting to their auditors and risk committees (eg. reports, budgets, etc).
Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?
The technological advances available to our practice have indeed changed our daily management and reporting to our clients. Our law firm has established strict case preparation and follow-up procedures, which include, inter alia, constant and detailed reporting to our clients. To do this, we use standardized reports as well as advanced digital platforms (via web or software programs) that help us expedite our internal procedures.
Further, the COVID-19 global pandemic has created a new set of challenges for all businesses. Our firm has ensured remote access to all required data, files, records, which allows our lawyers and support teams to work from home without compromising the continuity and quality of our services to our clients.
Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?
Our firm recently acted for three insurance distribution companies, affiliates of one of the largest insurance distribution companies worldwide, implementing strict compliance and corporate governance procedures, to meet the requirements set forth by the new Insurance Distribution Directive (Directive 2016/97) and also General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation 2016/679), as incorporated in domestic legislation, and comply with the new regulatory framework. Our firm drafted new cooperation contracts for each line of business, and also prepared standardized documentation in accordance with IDD requirements to facilitate our clients’ day-to-day business, such as insurance product information documents, loss reports, complaint reports, etc. We also undertook the preparation of business conduct policies, anti-money laundering policies, anti-corruption policies, privacy policies, applications for cross-border provision of services, and many more. Our work was not only efficient, as we managed to keep our clients in line with new regulations, but also insightful and responsive to their daily needs and long-term commitments.
Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three years’ time?
Our law firm represents some of the biggest insurance and reinsurance companies in Greece and many prominent businesses and multinational corporations from healthcare, construction and the commodities industry. Our relationship with most of our permanent clients extends over 25 years, which only proves that our clients look for stability and long-term relations built on trust. Our ability to understand the commercial aspects of the client’s business, combined with our unparalleled legal expertise, is the reason why our clients trust our practice and vouch for our efficiency all those years. We are confident that in the coming years our firm will continue to grow as we set our sights on new challenges.
