N .Korhan Sengun, Founder Partner

N .Korhan Sengun explains how the firm is adapting to clients’ changing needs

1) What do you see as the main points that differentiate Sengün & Sengün and Partners Law Firm from your competitors?

Our firm acts based on a philosophical ground. We believe that anything which is not based on philosophy cannot survive. Law is not only a compilation of rules; it is a living establishment that is affected by socio-economic and political developments. Therefore, the requirement of dealing with current law issues by taking into consideration the aforementioned factors is an inevitable outcome of both global and local logic of law. From this point of view and by applying such point of view in our activities, it has been observed that the clients who are fully informed in all these aspects are enlightened to the widest extent and are able to gain an extensive perspective on the settlement of the legal issue.

We attach great importance to both specializing of each of our attorneys in their respective field, and their having knowledge about each other area of law, also their being trained. Both in our country and across the world, as it is the case with everything else, law also undergoes continuous changes and each field of law constitutes an inseparable integrity. Hence we place importance that all our people gain knowledge and experience in other areas of law in addition to their field of specialisation, and keep them abreast all the time.

Furthermore, each country has its own specific culture, investment environment and different human relations and such factors have also an effect on law. Therefore, we know the social and political nature of our country very well and take actions accordingly to provide tailor made solutions to our clients in practice of law.

2) Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Speaking about Turkey, the issues such as women’s rights, environmental awareness, energy generation, technology, protection of personal data and animal rights are increasingly becoming more important and developing. As a matter of course, artificial intelligence has also started to become a current issue. Each country acts at a different pace in these matters. Globally speaking, China and the USA are leading the way in this respect. The gradually increasing gap between the countries will accelerate the drifting away of the cultures from each other, making people even more unfamiliar with each other’s cultures and lives. And legal professionals have many important duties at this stage. Indeed, persons who obtain legal education, which is an education that is full of challenges in every country, and become practitioners as legal professionals will naturally be equipped with a higher level of education and competence compared to laypersons. As a result of these characteristics, lawyers are in a position to establish, improve and develop the relations between the people of their country and nationals of other countries, and by this way they also act as voluntary communication ambassadors.

For these reasons, I believe that the most important issue of the future will be communication, and in a world where probably even the language translations will be performed by machines and every work, including law, will be performed by machines, persons who know well and understand both cultures will be able to decipher the communication between the new human and the old one and such persons will be amongst the rare ones in demand. In this context, we believe that the lawyers will be the persons who will provide this communication need by giving priority to human psychology in their dispute management. As a team, we practice law based on this philosophy and spirit.

3) What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Law constitutes a whole. And this fact requires evaluation of all areas of law in conjunction with each other. Each branch of law is tightly connected to each other. Interpretation of cases based on a single area of law or a single court decision by omitting such connections will cause erroneous results. In order to find the most suitable and correct solution for each case, one is required to have knowledge and experience in each area of law rather than mere specialization in a single area. And this is beyond the power of a single person. Therefore, we attach importance to act as a team and embrace our partners as well as any legal professional with different experience and knowledge. This change enables our clients to see their problems from all different aspects, enabling us to provide them with multi-dimensional and wide range of solutions focusing on every aspect rather than a single one, by using our experience and knowledge of 30 years.

4) Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Technology is important for us, but we give great weight to confidentiality as well. Confidentiality is a sensitive area for us. Therefore, we are aware that technology may become exposed to cyber-attacks and data may suddenly disappear. For these reasons, physical back-up is also essential for us. Moreover, we appreciate technological needs of our clients and act based on a principle of confidentiality for satisfying such needs including in teleconferences and in the systems we use.

5) Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

We are committed to holding meetings with our clients, listening to them personally, understanding their expectations, and establishing systems or developing their existing systems for them accordingly. Each client is unique. Therefore, each client has different needs. Some of our clients attach importance to establishment of a preventive law system, while some clients consider it important to inspect whether the existing system runs smoothly or not. We draft a specific roadmap for each client, support them during preparative processes and determine failing aspects of the system. This enables our clients to see their deficiencies and add value to their firms in terms of developing their businesses also from the perspective of law.

6) Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Each client has a peculiar character or corporate culture. Therefore, such factors change each client’s expectations. Indeed, changes can occur on both sides, and hence changes can occur on the client’s side as well as on the lawyers’ side on occasions. That being said, we know each of our clients very well and ensure that our clients stay in continuous communication with a particular attorney as much as possible. We also maintain and convey the organizational memory of our firm and commit ourselves to sustainability and stability of relations.

Strategic guidance on the other hand is something that each client expects from their attorney. A skilled lawyer not only knows legal rules but also understands how a certain set of legal rules apply in a particular case. And this can only be achieved by experience and extensive insight. Therefore, our law firm attaches importance to the complex and profound philosophy of the legal profession.

In 3 years’ time, our expectation is to meet more lawyers with knowledge and experience, and in this respect, to ensure a gradual increase in the quality of service we provide to our clients the number of which is ever increasing. Moreover, it is also important for us to improve corporate satisfaction of our lawyers. Indeed, if an attorney in your staff is not happy to be employed by you, your clients will also not want to select you. We want to keep going on our path firstly by respecting human labour and by also being a model to other law firms in this respect.
