She was successful in proving that commencement earlier of drug therapy with Acyclovir would have avoided catastrophic brain damage to a neonate who was suffering from herpes Simplex Encephalitis. She won significant damages for failure to perform appropriate post operative observations through the night and with 2 year old child deteriorating due to a hypo-perfusion injury which resulted in brain damage and epilepsy. Specialist areas include, surgical particularly gall bladder and bowel surgery, spinal injuries during surgery or failed diagnosis, brain injury due to infection or during birth, wrongful birth claims, due to failures in the screening process, late diagnosis of cancer resulting in loss of chance to survive and psychiatric claims following still birth neonatal death or injury.

Irwin Mitchell Leeds fields a 'fantastic' medical negligence team based in Sheffield and Leeds that is 'deserving of its very strong reputation in this area'. The team attracts praise for its ability to 'deal with cases of maximum severity and complexity' and 'undoubtedly works hard for clients to achieve the best possible result'. Headed by Julianne Moore in the Sheffield office and Rachelle Mahapatra in Leeds, the practice represents clients in complex matters involving brain and spinal injury cases and birth injury claims, including cerebral palsy, neonatal deaths and still birth . Mahapatra led a team in a complex development dysplasia case, whereby the practice was able to successfully establish causation, and achieved a favourable settlement for the client. In Leeds, Ross McWilliams is also recommended for his 'great client manner and good understanding'. New additions to the team include senior associate Lisa Swales in the Leeds office and associate Tania Harrison in Sheffield; they joined from Simpson Millar LLP  Leeds and Howells Sheffield respectively.
