Irwin Mitchell's recent work has included advising National Grid Plc on contracts related to its online training portal (among various other matters) and assisting Saga Plc with the procurement and customisation of a booking and reservation platform. Gatwick-based Daniel Hedley specialises in IT-related matters, such as software licensing and development, cloud services and IT outsourcing. National practice head Stuart Padgham , solicitor Michael Camps and senior associate solicitor Aurelia Butler-Ball (a specialist in the media and entertainment sector) are also located in Gatwick. Laurence Gavin in Sheffield handles a wide range of matters for clients in sectors such as education and charities, as well as the public sector. Joanne Bone, who leads the team in Leeds, complements her commercial contracts experience with knowledge about data protection issues. Southampton-based dispute resolution expert Hannah Clipston heads the practice at Irwin Mitchell, which handles sports work out of several UK offices. Clipston and the Gatwick-based Tom Barnard advised the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences on reviewing its appeals policy; Barnard and employment expert Simon Fenton assisted Jess Varnish with bringing an unfair dismissal case against British Cycling. On the private client side, the Chichester-based Michael Taylor continues to advise numerous high-profile sports people on wealth management and tax compliance matters. Stuart Padgham advised a large nutrition company on its sponsorship agreements with rugby player James Haskell and hockey player Alex Danson.

It advised Air Partner on the acquisition of SafeSkys and also assisted Brighton-based life sciences company Destiny Pharma with its admission to AIM and an institutional placing, in a transaction valued at £70m. The team in Crawley is led by Daniel Bastide and with Stuart Padgham as the national head of the group; the duo provide ‘timely, pragmatic advice and have high technical skills’. Faye Bargery has noted expertise in handling private equity transactions and on the commercial side, and Dan Hedley and solicitor Chris Bridges are ‘excellent’ with Bridges also highlighted for his strength in data protection matters.

The firm’s Gatwick office is the main centre of the firm’s national TMT practice, with key partners Stuart Padgham and Dan Hedley based in this office. Padgham and Hedley ‘are knowledgeable and provide timely, pragmatic advice, with high-quality technical skills, industry experience and expertise’; Hedley is noted in particular for his knowledge of banking law, contracts and FCA regulation. Highlights ranged from assisting LzLabs with a wide range of commercial contract and software licensing matters to advising Saga on the procurement and customisation of a replacement booking and reservation platform. Aurelia Butler-Ball was promoted to senior associate, with a practice focusing on new media and tech start-ups, especially those based in the Brighton area. Butler-Ball has also taken on responsibility for Kim Walker's client base, after Walker moved within the firm into an in-house role.

Padgham and Butler-Ball have been advising YouTube personality Em Ford on agreements with a major agency and a global cosmetic brand and continue to represent longstanding clients Lady Leshurr and the Conan Doyle Estate on the protection of their respective brands. Other clients of note include London Championships Limited, Wimpy Restaurants and The Sports Sphere. Sarah Birkbeck handles contentious matters in the media, technology and retail sectors and has advised clients on a range of claims, including for copyright infringement and for alleged breaches of post-termination restrictions. Tom Barnard was recently promoted to senior associate; he focuses on the entertainment and sports sector and regularly advises individuals, agents, clubs and commercial entities with interests in the sector.

Irwin Mitchell acts for international and national governing bodies, sports clubs, funders, agents, operators of leisure facilities and individual sports personalities on the full spectrum of sports law matters, with an emphasis on regulatory and governance advice. In 2017, practice head Hannah Clipston acted for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science on a review of the appeals policy through the Sport and Recreation Alliance Legal Panel, which then evolved into conducting a full review of all the association's policies. In another key mandate, employment partner Simon Fenton is acting for former British Olympian Jess Varnish following her removal from the British Cycling Olympic programme. Other key figures include Michael Taylor, who provides tax advice to sports personalities, and commercial contracts expert Stuart Padgham.
