Irwin Mitchell's recent work has included advising National Grid Plc on contracts related to its online training portal (among various other matters) and assisting Saga Plc with the procurement and customisation of a booking and reservation platform. Gatwick-based Daniel Hedley specialises in IT-related matters, such as software licensing and development, cloud services and IT outsourcing. National practice head Stuart Padgham , solicitor Michael Camps and senior associate solicitor Aurelia Butler-Ball (a specialist in the media and entertainment sector) are also located in Gatwick. Laurence Gavin in Sheffield handles a wide range of matters for clients in sectors such as education and charities, as well as the public sector. Joanne Bone, who leads the team in Leeds, complements her commercial contracts experience with knowledge about data protection issues. Irwin Mitchell's 'strong team' handles the full spectrum of charity issues. Singled out for his combination of 'in-depth knowledge' of charity law and 'commercial experience', Laurence Gavin heads the team and is regularly instructed by charities, charity group structures and academy schools on matters of governance, risk, funding and trustee duties. In a recent highlight, the group acted for Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust on the £7m purchase of Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest private residence in the UK. This required cross-departmental expertise from the firm's property and finance teams, as well as complex charity law application. Additionally, the practice advised Boccia England on the implementation of governance requirements imposed by the code of sports governance issues by Sport England and UK Sport.

Praised for his 'calm, responsive and considered approach', the 'excellent' Laurence Gavin heads the team and is leading advice to Telford College of Arts and Technology on its merger with New College Telford. This matter requires consideration of issues of governance and trustee duties, corporate arrangements, property and complex funding. In addition, the practice has significant experience acting for multi-academy trusts and was recently instructed by Maltby Learning Trust on the incorporation of St Thomas Wharton Academy into the trust. The team also works in partnership with the Association of Colleges in operating an employment helpline advising members on a range employment law matters.
