A Partner in the Newcastle office, Francesca specialises in helping people who have sustained serious and life changing injuries, particularly assisting individuals who have suffered brain and spinal cord injuries and multiple orthopaedic injuries in claiming compensation following injury. She has a particular interest in complex liability issues arising out of accidents in the workplace, and road traffic collisions particularly involving pedestrians, and has dealt with a number of claims which other solicitors have considered too difficult to pursue. Francesca is totally committed to helping her clients to make the best possible recovery from serious injury securing appropriate rehabilitation at the earliest possible opportunity. She has obtained many substantial interim payments to fund rehabilitation packages, the purchase of accommodation and care to improve her clients’ quality of life and to maximise their recovery. She is praised for her manner with clients, forming an excellent working relationship with them to help them to achieve their goals. Francesca has recovered tens of millions of pounds of compensation for her clients during her career.

Irwin Mitchell’s team covers an array of complex and high-volume claims, notwithstanding some changes on the senior level. Francesca Mayes continues to lead the serious injury subgroup, which has grown and gained a new partner with the promotion of Jane Pyrah in May 2021. Senior associate Laura Mcilduff is ‘tenacious and brilliant’. With Angela Kirtley ’s departure to Ward Hadaway LLP in August 2021, Sarah Coles now heads the medical negligence practice from both Leeds and Newcastle, supported by senior associate Samuel Hill and several new associate hires. Taking the place of Roger Maddocks, who retired in April 2022, as head of workplace injury is Ian Toft who moved from Leeds to Newcastle.
