Career

Nuno is an energy and international trade projects partner with particular expertise in hard commodities trading and mining and metals projects in Africa.    

He joined the firm from a global commodity trading firm where he was predominantly involved with Sub-Saharan African projects. He is involved in upstream and downstream oil and gas transactions and specialises in foreign direct investment projects, cross-border Mergers and Acquisitions and international commodities trade and trade finance. His clients are involved in transactions and projects in SADC and OHADA countries in particular Angola, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sao tome and Principe, South Africa and Tanzania. Nuno is a lead partner for Africa and heads Ince Africa Group from the London office.

Nuno is an English, Angolan and Portuguese qualified and registered lawyer. He has spent more than a decade in Africa and worked for major downstream and upstream Asian, and European and American clients over time. He is praised for his dedication and his dynamic and forward-thinking approach to challenges in growing African markets.

He is a member of the firm’s Energy and the Global Compliance & Regulatory Groups. He is also a member the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), the Angola Law Society and the Portuguese Law Society (non-practicing). 

Representative transactions include:

  • Advising the private investor in a PPP for a major integrated logistics Rail & Sea BOT concession project in Tanzania;
  • Assisting with the international aspects of structuring of joint investments above US$1.5 billion with the Angolan investment agency; 

  • Structuring the acquisition of a majority stake in a downstream retail joint venture in Angola; 

  • Leading the structuring of a major EPC construction project of clean fuel and bitumen storage terminals in Beira, Mozambique;
  • Assisting the sponsor on a cross-border prepayment arrangement, associated security and copper offtake agreements for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Assisting an international financial institution in relation to a US$ 500 millions term loan facility for the purchase of aircrafts for the Angolan national airline carrier; 
  • Advising a client in relation to committed and uncommitted trade finance documentation related to the sale of crude oil in a Sub-Saharan African jurisdiction.
Nuno published articles related to Africa mining and foreign investment in Lusophone countries regularly; he often contributes to national, international and online magazines and newspapers and is often invited to speak at events in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
