Career

Laurence is an aircraft finance specialist and has worked for lenders, arrangers, lessors and operators in a wide range of aircraft finance transactions from vanilla operating lease finance to tax-efficient lease structuring, JOLCOs and securitisations.

He has a particular expertise acting for lessees in connection with all aspects of lease negotiation and debt/JOLCO finance and for lenders and lessors in relation to problems with security and structural insolvency and consolidation risks. He occasionally advises operators in respect of total care agreements and in relation to purchase agreements with manufacturers. He practises English and Irish law, the latter being an asset in advising on Irish aircraft finance structures. He has been admitted to practise French law by the Barreau de Paris.

Laurence is based in Paris. He acted for Air France-KLM on a large volume of JOLCO financings, the first of the ECA “home-rule” dispensation A380 financings for Air France and as Irish counsel for Lufthansa’s A380 ECA financings. He advised major lessors in large aircraft portfolio securitisations in 2013 and 2014 and in a series of aircraft portfolio acquisitions in addition to day-to-day advice to lenders, lessors and lessees in relation to lease novations.

Laurence lectures on Trinity College Dublin’s Master of Laws’ aviation modules.

International finance structuring is an area of particular expertise for Ince & Co France SCP , which also offers a well-rounded skillset to commercial and specialist operators alike. While instructions from lessees constitute the majority of the firm's recent caseload, the team is also adept at acting for lessors. Laurence Hanley directs the practice, with key support coming from the recently promoted Aymeric de Tapol. Recent standout mandates include advising Air France both on the financing of a B737-800 aircraft via a conditional sale and on the novation of nine lease agreements to its new subsidiary Joon, as well as several instructions regarding Japanese operating leases. Wijet and HOP! also feature on the client list. Andrew Charlier relocated to the firm's Monaco office.
