Divorce and family

Position

Lois is a Director in the divorce and family law team at Vardags. Her practice involves cases in the tens and hundreds of millions of pounds and her work often has a strong international element with complex legal and factual disputes, as well as jurisdictional challenges.

Lois advises on all aspects of family breakdowns but with a particular focus on related financial issues. Her clients are both men and women, including key executives, prominent entrepreneurs and City professionals, whether married or unmarried. She is also very experienced in leading cases where financial claims are made on behalf of children in Schedule 1 proceedings.

Career

Lois joined Vardags in 2013 with a wealth of deal-making experience. Before practising family law, Lois worked as an in-house lawyer in the Corporate and Asset Finance division of a leading financial institution, and prior to that worked in international finance at a top-tier City law firm, with secondments to two other international banks. Lois’ past experience contributes to her strong understanding of complex remuneration packages and corporate structures including businesses.

Her background experience is particularly relevant to cases where corporate valuations are in dispute. In one case, she was successful in securing permission to obtain sole expert evidence which increased the value of the corporation by tens of millions.

Examples of Lois’ current cases include:

  • Securing the other side’s concession to set aside of a series of multiple multi-million pound transactions by, amongst other things, preparing detailed questionnaires requiring the production of extensive evidence.
  • A number of contested jurisdiction disputes, including one with an international asset based of an estimated £400m.
  • High Court proceedings seeking the revaluation of a business in light of the impact of Covid-19 on the basis that the terms of a concluded agreement are now unfair.

Lois’ legal commentary has been sought out by the media, including the FT, the Daily Mail, Family Law Week and BBC Radio 2. Reported cases include Quan v Bray [2014] EWHC 3340 (Fam).

Education

Lois read Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford before completing the LPC at BPP with distinction.

Leisure

Lois enjoys music, travel, skiing, and running.
