Career

David is a Herbert Smith Freehills partner heading the firm’s specialist Indonesian practice. He is seconded to associated Indonesian law firm, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung in Jakarta and leads a team of lawyers dedicated to Indonesian transactions and projects.

He is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, both spoken and written, and has practised in Jakarta since the early 1990s, advising on a broad range of cross-border commercial, corporate and financial transactions.

David's key areas of practice are mergers and acquisitions and financing in Indonesia. He works extensively in the Indonesian energy and natural resources sectors.

He also regularly supports the firm’s specialist Indonesian disputes resolution practice in relation to strategic and commercial aspects of regulatory investigations and dispute proceedings based on his long involvement and experience with Indonesian matters.

A major player in the project finance arena, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung in association with Herbert Smith Freehills has a client roster which includes the likes of Chevron, Rio Tinto and BP. Founding partner Mira Fadhya heads the practice and has extensive experience in advising multinational clients on Indonesian energy projects. Alongside David Dawborn, Fadhya recently advised Barclays and Deutsche Bank on their purchase of bonds from Star Energy Geothermal, issued for refinancing its operations. Dawborn has a strong focus on the natural resources sector, primarily on corporate and financing aspects. Dhani Maulana Pattinggi is another key figure and represented ENGIE on its acquisition of oil and gas fields from GDF SUEZ.
