The firm: Fleet Hamburg LLP was founded in December 2011 by eight experienced shipping lawyers (German Rechtsanwälte and English-qualified lawyers, including solicitors and a barrister) who had left large international law firms in order to form an independent, Hamburg-based maritime law firm, operating worldwide.

The majority of the work undertaken by Fleet Hamburg relates to maritime legal issues, or commercial/corporate legal issues and compliance issues relevant to the maritime industry.

Currently, the team of Fleet Hamburg comprises nine lawyers (five German Rechtsanwälte, two dual-qualified Rechtsanwälte and solicitors, one barrister and one solicitor).

Areas of practice: Fleet Hamburg advises clients on disputes concerning English and/or German law, and represents clients before English and German courts and international arbitration tribunals. Fleet Hamburg is an independent firm, based only in Hamburg. Therefore, the firm is able to work with the best local lawyers in any jurisdiction to safeguard the interests of its clients.

Charterparties, bills of lading and ship management contracts: one of the firm’s core practice areas deals with the classic ‘dry’ shipping issues arising in the context of the carriage of goods by sea as well as all aspects relating to the employment, operation and management of a ship, her crew and all ancillary aspects of a shipping business.

Energy and offshore: energy and offshore is an integral part of the firm’s practice and has been significantly growing over recent years. The firm assists offshore wind farm developers and energy providers, operators, contractors or insurers in drafting of contracts and tendering procedures, and advises also on permit requirements and dealing with the relevant authorities.

Admiralty and piracy: the firm’s team has extensive experience in assisting and advising its clients on a full range of legal issues arising from accidents at sea.

Marine insurance: Fleet Hamburg advises marine insurers and shipowners on complex cover issues, and conducts and co-ordinates resulting legal proceedings – often in several jurisdictions at the same time.

Shipbuilding and ship sale and purchase: a key area of the firm’s practice relates to drafting and review of shipbuilding and related contracts.

International trade and commerce: the firm’s team of English and German-qualified lawyers assists clients in relation to the full range of legal issues typical for international commercial contracts.

Passenger cruise industry: based on extensive experience, the firm is able to offer legal advice, not only in relation to the construction, acquisition, financing and repair of cruise vessels, but also assistance regarding all legal issues arising from tour packages and distribution agreements.

Logistics and transport: the firm assists and advises providers of transport and logistics services, as well as their clients, including providers of terminal and stevedore services, on the full range of legal issues and litigation or arbitration in respect of individual disputes, incidents or casualties.

Insolvency and restructuring: the firm has extensive expertise in advising and assisting its clients in enforcing their claims against insolvent estates, as well as defending recovery actions raised by insolvency administrators.

Court and arbitration proceedings, mediation and arrests: the firm represents clients in court and arbitration proceedings and in the different forms of alternative dispute resolution, including mediations. The firm’s team also includes experienced arbitrators and mediators, who are often called upon to arbitrate or mediate in local and international, maritime and commercial disputes.
