Position

Medical negligence claims – Anne is a partner who is a specialist in defending medical negligence claims on behalf of NHS Trusts and individual doctors. Anne is an NHSLA nominated partner. Regulatory work – Anne provides advice and representation to doctors facing investigations by the General Medical Council. She is head of Hempson's crime team and undertakes the defence of serious criminal allegations, including gross negligence manslaughter, corporate manslaughter and fraud. Inquests – Anne regularly provides advice and representation to NHS organisations and individual doctors at inquests.

Hempsons' professional discipline team is 'extremely strong'. The team’s core work is focused on defending practitioners under investigation by the GMC, GDC and GOC, and representing appellants and respondents before the First Tier Tribunal, Family Health Service Authority and in the Administrative Court. It also acts for its extensive health and social care sector client base in complex investigations involving police, coroners, the NHS Counter Fraud Authority and the Health and Safety Executive. London-based Chris Morris is national professional discipline head and Tania Francis is a defendant clinical negligence expert. Manchester's Katherine Sheldrick is the northern team head, while Anne Ball heads up the crime and regulatory team. Katherine Sheldrick is also highly regarded; Hannah Stephenson was made partner in 2019; and Julie Hesketh was hired from Ryan Solicitors.

Hempsons' large defendant clinical negligence department is known for handling complex and high value cases, with notable expertise in periodical payments and multi-party cases. The team is also renowned for its experience in handling claims relating to obstetric and surgical negligence as well as severe spinal cord injuries. Anne Ball leads the practice, which has seen a number of changes in recent months as the firm continues to develop its young talent. James Down, Jennie Chapman and Helen Claridge were all promoted to partner in July 2018, while Racquelle Morris retired.
