Position

Dr. Giannakopoulos heads the TMT, Antitrust / Competition and Regulatory Practice. He provides qualified strategy, policy, and management over client regulatory matters, TMT, and legal practices. Additionally, he manages representation before national, international, and EU governing bodies regarding complaint pertaining to antitrust and competition matters. Furthermore, he provides consultations on aligning practices with expectations set out by law and company standards. Dr. Giannakopoulos delivers insight on strategies to optimize company positioning and strengthen market dominance while remaining in compliance with existing legal frameworks and requirements.

Dr. Giannakopoulos has also long, extensive, and specific experience in respect of personal data protection and compliance with the relevant regulatory/legislative obligations, gained within the context of his duties, among others, of General Counsel, and Director of Corporate Risk and Compliance, in big Greek and multinational Group of Companies.

Within the context of his professional activities, Dr. Giannakopoulos provides, among others, legal expert counselling in respect of issues pertaining to the legislative and regulatory framework governing personal data protection at national and EU level to Greek and multinational companies carrying out business operations in Greece.

Career

As Senior Counsel and Head of Regulatory at Vodafone Greece (his role prior to joining us), he led a team of 40 which managed the company’s regulatory function.  He was also the regulatory face of the company, interacting with Greek ministries and other regulatory authorities (including supranational EU bodies).

In 2008, Dr Giannakopoulos  was the Chief Legal Counsel and one of the principal negotiators in one of the largest Greek telecoms transactions of recent years: Forthnet’s €500mn acquisition of the satellite platform NOVA, managing the complex obtainment of regulatory approval for the deal.

His experience on the enforcement side of regulation, which includes tenures as internal legal advisor at the National Telecommunications and Posts Commission (EETT) and stagiaire at the EU Commission’s competition arm, gives him remarkable insight into the regulatory process. Responsible for enforcement of competition rules and final decisions regarding e-communications companies, he also helped create the framework for liberalization of the EU telecoms market.
