Position

Nelson Raposo Bernardo is the managing partner and head of the banking and projects practices, co-heading the Corporate Law and M&A practice.

Career

Nelson has more than 30 years of international experience in high-profile and complex operations and has been involved in multiple transactions in Portugal and abroad. He focuses on M&A, banking and finance, capital markets, project finance and private equity, as well as corporate restructuring and corporate finance. Some of his recent transactions include advising the leading French Bank on an aircraft portfolio financing; a Fund in the acquisition of the leading player in the Fertilizers commodity; a specialized automotive Bank on international credit operations; an Asian Bank for International Cooperation in operations regarding export loan agreements; an African Bank for financing the acquisition of a Ferry Boats portfolio; an US manufacturer for a power wind farm project; or two flag European Banks in a syndicated operation with another 15 banks for the refinancing of an international construction group.

He is also strongly experienced and reputed in legislating, being co-author of the present Portuguese Securities Code and led several legislative reform committees, in several countries, in banking, financial, real estate and construction areas. He has published books and articles on corporate law, banking and contract law, and participated as a speaker seminars and conferences in Portugal and abroad.

Education

Holds a degree in Law from the Law School of the University of Lisbon, a Masters in Juridical Sciences (Corporate Law) from the same School, where is he is also presently working on his doctorate in Corporate Law. Assistant Professor of Corporate and Commercial Law at Law School of the University of Lisbon (1991-2006) and in Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise Start-Up and Management courses at INDEG/ISCTE (Audax) (2005-present), one of the most reputed business school in Portugal. He is also chairman of boards of general meetings of several companies and associations.
