Finance & Insurance

Partner, head of Finance & Insurance sector group in the Baltics and Belarus

As a partner with the firm’s Finance & Insurance team and a business sector enthusiast, all energy of Augustas Klezys goes into providing cross-practice advice to financial sector companies.

Finance sector team leader. Within the firm Augustas leads this team by assembling legal experts to establish the specific legal needs of clients and provide them with exact solutions.

Most complex transactions. It has been a privilege to advise financial sector companies in most complex and innovative transactions. For example, Augustas worked with the Lithuanian legal teams that advised the Nasdaq, Luminor, Šiaulių bankas and LNG Terminal transactions.

Co-author for country opinion. In 2018 Augustas co-authored the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) netting country opinion for Lithuania. As Sorainen is a member of ISDA, Augustas plays an active role at meetings and provide insights on national derivatives-related regulations.

Advising FinTech firms. FinTech companies often seek Augustas’ advice on licencing their activities in the EU as well as to help them streamline operations after they obtain licences.

Ex-banker. His focus on the financial sector and cross-practice benefits is continuous: before joining Sorainen Augustas headed the legal unit at DNB Lithuania (now Luminor).

Sorainen’s presence across the Baltic region makes it a popular choice for pan-Baltic financings and transactions, as is evidenced by the fact that it acts for major names such as JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and BNP Paribas. The team has a strong track record acting for clients on bond issuances, and it is also very active in emerging areas, such as fintech and green finance transactions. Managing partner Tomas Kontautas  is a key name for regulatory assistance and transactions that have a nexus to the insurance sector. He jointly leads the team with former banker Augustas Klezys, who is highly experienced in banking transactions and fintech licensing, as well as matters involving international swaps and derivatives.

Lithuania > Fintech

Pan-Baltic firm Sorainen has a sizeable footprint in the Lithuanian fintech market, as has been evidenced by its work for the Lithuanian government, which recently included advising on its guidelines on tokenised IPOs. Also notable is that the firm is an official partner of the Wise Guys Fintech 3 accelerator programme, which is an initiative set up to encourage startups to set up in Lithuania. Managing partner Tomas Kontautas, who formerly worked for the financial regulator, has been very active in assisting international companies with obtaining e-money licences. He co-heads the practice with ex-banker Augustas Klezys, who is similarly well-placed to handle complex licensing and regulatory issues.
