Bevan Brittan LLP has a track record of work with the Department for Education and the Welsh Government, particularly in developing free schools and new schools in Wales. It also advises local authorities on the impact of schools acquiring academy status. Head of practice Andrew Tobin advises on a wide range of educational matters and focuses on the construction and refurbishment of schools. He is supported by David Hutton, who handles the project finance side of education-led regeneration projects.
The local government team at Bevan Brittan LLP continues to act for local authorities all over the country, with offices across the UK giving the firm a strong national reach. The main work themes for the team this year have been the commercialisation agenda, growth and place agenda, governance, contract management, disputes and the response to climate change from local authorities. Practice head David Hutton advises on transportation, environmental disasters, procurements and PPPs and PFIs, while Virginia Cooper advises clients on powers and jurisdiction, as well as supporting them with investigations and judicial reviews. Steven Smith leads on high profile local authority development work and Olivia Carter has defended a number of high profile judicial reviews and procurement challenges. The last year has seen the team grow with the arrivals of public & regulatory law expert Melanie Carter from Bates Wells, commercial specialist Ash Woodcock from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP and pensions head Nigel Bolton from Freeths LLP.
Bevan Brittan LLP‘s team capably handles corporate, commercial, contentious, employment and pensions matters as well as transactions, clinical risk matters and inquests for numerous local authorities. It has a strong track record in tenders, and also advises on modern challenges such as climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic. Firm-wide practice head David Hutton specialises in commercialisation issues, strategic partnering work and place-based schemes. David Kitson has knowledge of administrative and governance topics as well as information law, and Judith Hopper is a contact for commercial litigation. Judith Barnes retired in summer 2021.
