The firm: Asserson launched in 2005 as a bold experiment in providing UK legal services a little differently. It has teams in real estate, planning, business law, finance, employment, arbitration and dispute resolution. We have offices in London and Tel Aviv and act for international clients doing business under English law.

Each of our teams operates as a boutique, with the advantages of a close-knit committed team, combined with the ability to connect across business areas when required.

Asserson has a track record of involvement in some of the most substantial disputes’ cases that have taken place in the UK Courts, frequently acting on high profile and leading cases. We are also involved in major real estate and corporate deals. The firm works with global businesses and private clients, frequently finding itself alongside and against some of the biggest international law firms.

Asserson has always sought to be a different kind of legal practice. Its senior lawyers and partners actively lead on client work. The lawyers are with the firm for the long-term, and maintain its client relationships with the same commitment. Asserson strives to understand its clients and their business, and in doing so seeks to work innovatively, to think differently, and ultimately on behalf of its clients, to win differently.

Areas of practice
Business law: Asserson brings together extensive in-house and private practice legal expertise to deliver services across all areas of corporate law, all business sectors, and across borders. It is actively involved in setting up businesses, helping them expand, supporting business reorganisation, whether through merger and acquisition, or other forms of restructuring, and it has experience at working through demergers and dissolutions when those are required.

Dispute resolution and international arbitration: Asserson’s team brings market-leading litigators and arbitrators together with some of the rising stars of the future on behalf of an international client base which includes sovereign states, international government agencies, multinational corporations, banks and high-net-worth individuals. It has expertise in a wide range of fields including banking law, complex financial instruments, mining, telecoms, fraud, proceeds of crime, human rights/public law, judicial review, renewable energy, professional negligence, international trust work and defamation.

Finance: Asserson’s expertise includes secured and unsecured lending, debt and equity restructurings, project finance and infrastructure transactions, emerging market investments, leveraged acquisitions and disposals and real estate finance. It acts for lenders and lending syndicates, multilateral lending institutions (IFIs), private equity funds and fund managers and borrowers. It regularly acts on transactions involving multiple jurisdictions.

Planning: The firm successfully manages landmark regeneration schemes and major public/private development initiatives with a strong track record in winning on appeal. Its team draws on a mix of private and public sector expertise, and often gets involved early on, providing strategic and long-term input through the lifetime of a project.

Real estate: Asserson real estate works across the commercial and residential sectors, through acquisitions and disposals, commercial leases, development schemes, planning advice, landlord and tenant matters, building contracts and warranties, and property finance. Its business model also allows Asserson to handle both large-scale initial transactions and subsequent plot sales, management work and leasing up.

Private client: We act extensively for family offices and individuals across litigation, real estate and corporate areas.

CLIENT: Lawrence Guyer, Group Legal Adviser

COMPANY/FIRM: Ferryspeed Ltd.

TESTIMONIAL: I have worked with Asserson for a number of years now. What sets them apart from the great majority of external lawyers I have dealt with is their approach to looking at how any issue affects the whole business operation rather than trying to provide a solution to one specific problem. They have an ability to put themselves in the shoes of their client and accordingly appreciate what is and what is not important. At their level technical ability should and can be assumed: It is the added insights that truly add value to their work.

CLIENT: Private Investor

COMPANY/FIRM: Real Estate Investment Group based in New York

TESTIMONIAL: I just wanted to express my most profound gratitude to every one of you for all that you have contributed to this transaction. I know that in many ways it has been a frustrating process… however, through all of it, you have been professional, dignified, tireless and provided sage counsel. I thank you, you have my profound gratitude and deepest appreciation. I know how good you are and how much you have done.

CLIENT: Bill Sneyd, Co-founder, COO and Strategy Director

COMPANY/FIRM: HomeSun (Green Energy Company)

TESTIMONIAL: I always felt that we were getting very clear legal advice, but with a healthy dose of commercial pragmatism. I was consistently impressed with the detailed knowledge of [our] business… and a willingness to dig deep to get to the heart of our operation. I always felt that… we were in good hands!

CLIENT: General Counsel

COMPANY/FIRM: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)

TESTIMONIAL: I have worked with Robert [Gross] for more than 15 years. He is a pleasure to work with – responsive and commercial – and his substantial experience brings considerable added-value to the matters on which he is involved. He would be my first choice in most cases where I need to instruct lawyers.

CLIENT: Senior Director

COMPANY/FIRM: International Corporate

TESTIMONIAL: A fabulous example of legal driving the business not holding it back. No time for issues and red-tape which slow business down without adding any measurable commensurate benefit. Dealing with them is like a breath of fresh-air.

CLIENT: Asher Gratt

COMPANY/FIRM: London community organisation

TESTIMONIAL: Allow me to express our heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation for your dedicated and very hard work… there is a beacon of light out there in the shape of Asserson’s Law Firm who will leave no stone unturned in seeking to protect us from… insensitive and draconian oppression.

Trevor Asserson, Senior Partner

Senior Partner Trevor Asserson explains how the firm is adapting to clients’ changing needs

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Asserson from your competitors?

Our location, with our central office in Tel Aviv enables us to attract and retain lawyers of a remarkably high quality which UK firms based in England cannot do. Furthermore, because those lawyers are prepared to change country to join us, we have a self-selecting system for identifying outstanding lawyers who are both entrepreneurial and courageous.

Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Our business law offering is particularly attractive to mid-cap corporates. The hands-on, solutions based and business minded approach which comes so naturally to our lawyers is very compelling. Our litigation offering, ranked amongst the strongest in the area is likely to continue to attract large cases.

Post-Covid 19, the property and planning offering is attractive to overseas investors who see the UK as both safe and inexpensive.

What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Our specialist GDPR offering has proved popular with a range of clients. We have teamed up with a cyber-security technology company, and so can provide legal and compliance advice, together with customised technology solutions.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Because remote working is baked into our business model, we found the move to home working forced on us by Covid 19 almost seamless.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

Our Business Law “in-house counsel” offering has literally removed headaches, cleared desks and freed up our clients to get on with making money and stop worrying about law. They just send any legal question to us, knowing that we will sort it.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Different clients have different needs and we aim to identify and fulfil the varying needs of all our clients. We have a compelling business model which has driven growth since we opened and there is every reason that this will continue.
