Career
Professor Jean-Paul Vulliéty joined LALIVE as a partner in 1998. He has extensive experience advising clients in international commercial transactions, subject to Swiss law, foreign laws or international conventions (e.g. the Vienna Convention on Sale of Goods), particularly sales, agency, distribution, license, franchising, security, shareholder and joint venture agreements. He frequently acts as lead counsel in complex acquisition operations.
Professor Vulliéty has also been involved in more than 80 commercial arbitration proceedings, as counsel or arbitrator (sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator or chairman), under all the main rules of international arbitration (including UNCITRAL, ICC and Swiss Rules). He is listed on the panels of arbitrators of the ICC (Switzerland), the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and the Franco-American Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Executive Committee of ELArb, the Europe-Latin America Arbitration Center in Hamburg. He chairs the Selecting Committee for Arbitrators and Mediators of ACT (Alternative Dispute Resolution for Commodity Trading, Shipping and Trade Finance) established jointly by the Swiss Chambers Arbitration Institution (SCAI) and the Swiss Trading & Shipping Association (STSA). He also chairs the IDArb Selecting Committee for Arbitrators, a dispute resolution body established jointly by the Swiss Chambers Arbitration Institution (SCAI) and the International Distribution Institute (IDI – Torino).
His expertise in corporate and commercial law matters and dispute resolution encompasses a wide range of sectors including life sciences and biotechnology, pharmaceutical, luxury goods, transport (aviation and rail), energy (particularly oil & gas), commodities, construction and infrastructure projects and real estate transactions.
Professor Vulliéty is a member of several professional associations, including the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA), the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), where he is chairing the International Sales Commission since 2014, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI – member of the ADR Committee), the Swiss-Arab Chamber of Commerce (Chairman since 2013, board member in charge of legal affairs from 2008 to 2013), the Licensing Executive Society (LES), the International League of Competition Law and the ICC Commission on Commercial Law and Practice (CLP – member of the Swiss delegation, actively involved in the working group in charge of redrafting various ICC model agreements, including the ICC model international sale contract). He is also a member of the ICC’s Institute of World Business Law, and has taken over the chairmanship of the Civil and administrative law Commission of the Geneva Bar.
Over the years, Professor Vulliéty has held several academic positions namely at the University of Geneva since 2003 where he is currently a full professor in charge of the chair of Business law of the Geneva University School of Economics and Management (GSEM). He is the director of the Geneva University Master of International Trading. He is also on the scientific board of the Belgian Revue de droit international et de droit comparé, for which he is the Swiss correspondent. He holds a PhD, summa cum laude, in international business law and a D.E.S. (Masters) in Swiss Contract Law from the University of Geneva.
