Richard was appointed a director of Werksmans in 2007 and heads the firm’s Banking & Finance practice group. 

Career

Director Richard Roothman is Head of Banking & Finance, also advising in the Africa practice area. Richard specialises in banking and financial services regulation; debt capital markets; exchange control; leveraged and acquisition finance; leveraged and management buy-outs; project and limited recourse finance; structured finance transactions; listings/flotations; public offerings and private placements; securitisation, and syndicated and bilateral financing structures. Richard is consistently recognised in international rankings, including being named as a leading lawyer in Capital Markets (2010 – 2017), Banking (2011-2017) and in Project Finance (2011 – 2013) by IFLR1000: The Guide to the World’s Leading Financial Law Firms.

Memberships

Richard is a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces.

Education

Richard has BCom (Law) and LLB degrees from the University of Pretoria. He also has two LLM degrees, one from Cornell University in the USA and the second, an LLM in Tax, from the University of the Witwatersrand. Richard is an admitted attorney in New York, USA, as well as South Africa.
