Position

Peter Hesseling is a Director in our Corporate and Commercial practice and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Peter has extensive experience in insolvency law, company law, corporate restructuring, transaction structuring, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, black economic empowerment, the investment industry (including the design and implementation of fund structures for various asset classes), various types of financing, and selected areas of tax law.

Career

Peter began his career in 1993 as a Candidate Attorney at Herbsteins (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) and became a Director in 1997. Before completing his articles, Peter trained in the South African Navy (where he served as a legal officer) and resided and worked in the Netherlands.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr continues to be at the forefront of listed company transactions in South Africa with strong teams in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is also building its presence in private equity deals, is 'accessible and has a wide range of skills'. Clients include Abraaj Group, Anglo American, Arcelormittal South Africa, Burger King, Dell, FirstRand and Heineken. It advised Sinopec, the Chinese oil giant, on its acquisition of 75% of Chevron’s downstream oil assets in South Africa and Botswana. Willem Jacobs is 'practical, solutions oriented and cost conscious' and David Pinnock is 'personable', 'gets the job done' and is recommended for private equity transactions. Johan Latsky, Peter Hesseling and Lilia Franca are also highly rated.
