Work Department

Corporate and M&A

Partner, Head of Corporate practice

Louis-François du Castillon is an attorney with almost 20 years' experience in mergers and acquisitions and I head the corporate department in our Brussels office. I graduated from the Université Catholique de Louvain-La-Neuve (magna cum laude) and I hold a postgraduate in financial law from the University of Gent (RUG). I am teaching assistant at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). I have been recurrently ranked in Chambers and in Legal 500.With a strong financial law and real estate background, I primarily focus on domestic or cross-border transactions, with a particular focus on the private equity, venture capital, industrial and real estate sectors.

I also deal with complex, cross-border, corporate restructurings and I also have significant expertise in public reorganisations, which includes significant expertise with (international) not-for-profit entities (associations, public interest companies, sui generis entities, ...), simplification of governmental bodies and drafting legislation. In this field, I have coordinated the restructuring of the public housing sector and the restructuring of the economic public bodies supporting the Brussels economy and commerce.

I assist my clients, ranging from promising start-ups to transnational groups at every stage of their growth and provide them strategic corporate advice (joint-venture, shareholders agreements, growth capital, stock option plans, convertible bonds / loans, complex governance schemes, etc.).

The corporate team at Fieldfisher has 'excellent capabilities, both domestically and internationally' and the ability to 'provide high-quality advice on different kinds of transactions'. Louis-François du Castillon heads up the practice, which is highlighted for providing 'great value for the work done, and partner engagement'. It counts Cementir Holding, Emasphere and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton among its clients. The 'proactive, solution-driven and knowledgeable' Thomas Lenn is a key name to note; he 'combines a classic M&A and private equity practice with a capital markets practice'.

  • Is comparative advertising unfair?

THE EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE (ECJ) IS IN THE midst of considering questions referred to it by the UK courts in three separate cases that should clarify the law regarding comparative advertising. This type of advertising, particularly when it identifies a competitor or a competitor’s goods or services by referring to a registered trade mark, is of particular concern to trade mark owners as their competitors normally seek to make unfavourable comparisons with their own goods or services, or to take advantage of being associated with the market leader’s brand.
