Commercial & Litigation / Insurance & Reinsurance.

Based in Brussels and Hasselt, Hugo is a partner in Lydian's Commercial & Litigation practice and, together with Sandra Lodewijckx, also the Head of the firm's well-known and prestigious Insurance & Reinsurance team. He has had a wide practice over more than 20 years in commercial law advice and commercial litigation. He has extensive experience in commercial disputes, contract termination claims, corporate litigation and he is particularly well-known for reinsurance and insurance litigation. As he often represents international clients, he is very well aware of the cultural and legal differences in commercial contracts between Belgian and non-Belgian companies. He is the trusted advisor of a large number of international and Belgian reinsurers and insurers, brokers and specialist foreign law firms.

Hugo joined Lydian as a partner in 2001. In 1991, he started as an attorney with Loeff Claeys Verbeke (now Allen & Overy Belgium), where, from 1999, he was responsible for developing the insurance law practice. Hugo is also visiting Professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) where he teaches International Trade as part of the Banaba Advanced Business Management International Law Program. Hugo was admitted to the Brussels Bar in 1991 and is now a member of both the Brussels Bar and the Hasselt Bar, admitted to plead cases before all Belgian courts.

Dutch, English, French, German.

Hugo is a member of the insurance committee of the International Bar Association (IBA), of the Belgian Risk Management Association (BELRIM) and of the Belgian Association of Insurance Lawyers (AJA). He is also a member of the Brussels Bar and Hasselt Bar.

Hugo graduated summa cum laude with a law degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) in 1991. In 1995, he obtained a degree in insurance science from the IPO Management School of the University of Antwerp (UIA). In 2002 he completed a postgraduate course in financial management at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL). He also often acts as counsel or arbitrator in arbitration proceedings.
