Position

Alan assists with a wide range of IP and commercial matters, primarily for clients in the knowledge and technology-based economies, the creative industries and the cultural sector. He has a diverse practice advising on copyright, trade marks and general commercial contracts, with a particular interest in technology law, software agreements and IP rights in an IT context. Alan also advises on data protection law, electronic commerce and the use of IP rights as business assets.

Career

Alan trained at Farrer & Co and qualified as a solicitor in the IP & Commercial Team in September 2012. Alan was seconded to the LTA during his training contract and has since been seconded to the V&A.

Farrer & Co is well-known for its high-end work in sectors such as education, art and heritage and media (including broadcasting). Its ability to cover the full range of commercial contracts has enabled it to build up a notable portfolio of clients, including National Gallery, Museum of London, Bauer Media, the Lawn Tennis Association and Imperial College London. Practice head Peter Wienand specialises in negotiating commercial agreements involving IP-rich issues, such as collaborations, R&D and technology transfer. Other notable individuals are David Copping and associate Jane Randell, who were part of the team which recently advised Brookfield Business Partners on the corporate and commercial contracts issues associated with its indirect investment in, and strategic partnership with, electric car charger company Chargemaster Plc. Another highlight saw Henry Sainty  and Paul Jones act for UK Athletics in the staging in 2017 of the IAAF World Athletics Championships and the IPC World ParaAthletics Championships. Paul Jones and associate Alan Baker are other highly regarded practitioners.

Department head Paul Jones¬†advised the British Library on digitisation projects relating to its online newspaper archive. Jones and Henry Sainty¬†advise Bauer Media on a range of matters including on infrastructure contracts supporting its print and digital supply chains. Peter Wienand¬†advises The Economist Group on a range of IP, commercial and reputation management matters. Sainty and Richard Lane, who leads on media sector M&A matters, act for Sage Publishing Group on a range of issues such as GDPR, and also advised on its acquisition of Wichtig International from its shareholders. Employment partner Jonathan Eley¬†and Sainty regularly advise Telegraph Media Group. Associates Owen O‚ÄôRorke¬†and Alan Baker¬†are also key members of the group, as is litigator¬†Ian De Freitas, who joined in 2017 from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP. Michael Patrick has left the firm for an in-house role.
