Ian has over twenty-five years’ experience as a litigator in resolving disputes for clients in a wide range of sectors. In particular, he specialises in disputes involving intellectual property, technology and data. More recently, he has used his experience of dealing with risk to assist clients in achieving compliance with the stricter standards of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).


Ian is a past President of the Intellectual Property Commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats, an international association of mainly private practice lawyers.

Farrer & Co‘s ‘really excellent‘ corporate and commercial litigation practice is regularly instructed in major disputes. It is a first port of call for clients in cases involving complex company structures and asset holdings, shareholder disputes and cross-border commercial contracts. Almost all of the practice’s work has an international dimension; recent highlights included matters spanning the Caribbean and Channel Islands, as well as the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe. Leading the firm’s commercial litigation team is Adrian Parkhouse, who has over 30 years of civil litigation experience. The group also includes Kate Allass, who has particular expertise in complex corporate and shareholder disputes. Jolyon Connell is noted for commercial disputes involving financial institutions, private banks and investment funds. Also integral to the department are commercial litigation specialists Ben Longworth and John WilkinsonIan De Freitas focuses on claims concerning data privacy, IP, IT and outsourcing issues. William Charrington and Blue Elliott are experienced senior associates, Victoria Atkins has ‘superb mastery of cases involving multiple jurisdictions‘ and Oliver Blundell is ‘a hard-working junior with good judgement‘.

Farrer & Co has strong credentials in the publishing sector, as is evidenced by its work for large newspaper and magazine groups, and also its prominence in specialised areas such as academic and music publishing. One of the notable individuals at the firm is Henry Sainty, who acts for clients such as Bauer Media and Sage Publications. Elsewhere, beyond the publishing space, the team advises international broadcast production and TV rights companies, and sporting events rights holders. In addition, Peter Wienand has a particular focus on B2B data businesses. Practice head Paul Jones handles digitalisation projects and advises on broadcasting work. Clients also benefit from the expertise of corporate partner Richard Lane (who is experienced in media sector M&A), employment specialist Jonathan Eley and litigator Ian De Freitas. Recent work for Farrer & Co’s IP department highlights the firm’s strength across the non-contentious disciplines. Practice head Peter Wienand has taken the lead on international collaborations in the entertainment space, as well as a spate of copyright licensing, and IP exploitation projects for arts, education, charity and cultural institutions. David Copping and associate Natalie Rimmer also have commercial IP expertise, while litigator Ian De Freitas was instructed to pursue online infringement actions against fraudulent websites.
