Tom is an Associate in Farrer & Co’s Reputation Management practice, and is also a member of the firm’s Sports Group. Tom provides reputation management, contentious media and IP advice to a full range of the firm’s clients, including individuals, corporates and institutions. He has experience advising both claimants and defendants on defamation, privacy, contentious data protection, cyber security, harassment, and copyright and trademark law. He works alongside communications advisers, investigative firms, and IT and cyber security specialists to help devise strategies on, and responses to, sensitive issues where the reputational risk is significant.

Tom frequently advises sports organisations and individuals on contentious, regulatory and commercial matters. His clients include international and national sports governing bodies, as well as a number of professional sportsmen and women and other sports organisations. Tom’s experience includes advising Farrer & Co’s sports clients on various forms of dispute resolution (comprising litigation, arbitration at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and mediation), internal investigations, disciplinary and selection issues, and the drafting of key policies (such as those relating to anti-doping and the selection of athletes for major events).

Tom has spent time in-house on two separate secondments at the Lawn Tennis Association.


Tom joined Farrer & Co as a trainee in 2011 and qualified in September 2013. He spent five months on secondment at the Lawn Tennis Association in 2013.

Farrer & Co’s sports team has a strong track record of advising national governing bodies on event planning, safeguarding, disciplinary matters, reputation management and disputes, in addition to a wealth of expertise providing bespoke advice to athletes and footballers on their private affairs and handling complex safeguarding investigations for major football clubs. Partner Henry Sainty, who specialises in commercial contracts for sports rights holders, advised UK Athletics on the staging of the 2018 Athletics World Cup, which included corporate structuring issues and sponsorship and broadcast agreements. Associate Tom Rudkin specialises in disputes, arbitration and reputation management and brings considerable litigation experience to the group, having previously represented clients in the High Court and the CAS.

The reputation management team at Farrer & Co specialises in acting for high profile and wealthy individuals. An increasing share of the team’s stellar client roster consists of major charities and sports governing bodies. The firm also represents a number of household name publications on the defendant side. Department head Julian Pike has been involved in several high-profile matters and also advises his clients on planning and preventing crises. As such, he handled reputation management issues for the Football Association and the England Football team throughout the 2018 World Cup, which included protecting the privacy of all individual players and their families. Key associates Tom Rudkin  and Alicia Mendonça-Richards , who advises a large number of international clients thanks to her foreign language skills, are on the forefront of many cases.
