Van Doorne is part of an extensive worldwide network of other leading, independent firms. This enables the firm to provide clients with advice and assistance swiftly across the globe, independently.

Van Doorne’s mission is to empower people and organisations and to work on responsible, permanent solutions. This is reflected throughout the firm. From the way in which lawyers work together to the ngo’s and non profit organisations that are supported by the firm. Van Doorne ‘reaches further and stays close’. That is, first and foremost, the firm’s promise to its clients but also to its partners, associates and young talent.

International work: The firm is proud of its Dutch client base, which comprises large and medium-sized companies, banks, insurance companies, semi-public government institutions and Dutch subsidiaries of foreign enterprises. Van Doorne is also well known for its international practice, serving a large number of international clients, particularly from the UK and the US. The majority of transactional work carried out by the banking and corporate teams (including tax) is cross border. The independent status of Van Doorne provides it with a great opportunity to work with the best-equipped law firms in other countries. Over the past decades, the firm has maintained close working relationships with leading law firms in all important jurisdictions from all over the world.

Clients: Van Doorne works for prominent Dutch and international companies, business and financial service providers, semi-public organisations and government institutions. Van Doorne aims to maintain long-term relationships with its clients. The firm has been working with most of them for many years, and that is something to be very proud of.

Diversity at Van Doorne

Van Doorne has been at the forefront of the industry for many years when it comes to diversity. More than a third of our partners are women, and the overall male/female ratio in our workforce is almost equal. Our internal diversity committee, consisting of people with different backgrounds and years of experience, structurally underpins our commitment to this issue. In addition, we have been active externally for many years with, for example, the Forward Foundation and the IMC Weekend School, and together with the Vrije Universiteit and the Dutch Bar Association we try to bridge the gap to students with a non-Western background. Van Doorne can accurately describe itself as a firm where there is room for everyone.

Van Doorne has an active policy to give employees confidence, so that every talent is given the space to develop optimally. In the Netherlands, the firm has previously received the Innovation Prize for Diversity from the Royal Notarial Association, and the Sonja Boekman Prize; and internationally, it has won the Best National Firm for Women in Business Law Award and the Gender Diversity Initiatives Award. Our partners have also been recognised at an individual level; most recently, Vanessa Liem was a finalist for a Global People Award (alongside the firm being nominated for Best Diversity Firm) at the M&A Awards.

Finally, the Pieter van Doorne Fund was established in 2021, which stimulates sustainability and equality of opportunity by supporting a number of charities. As a committed partner, it supports organisations with financial resources that pursue the same goals.

We advised Stern Groep N.V., the listed Dutch mobility group in automotive retail and services, on the sale and transfer of all the shares in SternFacilitair B.V. to Hedin Mobility Group AB. SternFacilitair B.V., the Dutch mobility group in automotive retail and services, is pleased to report that it will be part of Hedin Mobility Group AB as per Q1 2022. Hedin Mobility Group is a large family-owned company with operations in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland, mainly in the sale and service of vehicles, wholesale of spare parts and tires for vehicles and rental car operations. The transaction involves the core operating assets of SternFacilitair B.V., which consist of the dealer activities, the car repair activities, the car rental activities and holding activities of SternFacilitair, but excluding the shares Stern holds in Bovemij N.V. The total value of the transaction is at least EUR 103 million. The cash consideration to be paid by Hedin Mobility Group AB is EUR 83 million, allowing Stern Groep N.V. to pay an extraordinary dividend of up to EUR 14.75 per share. According to Stern and Hedin, the scale of the relationships with major automotive manufacturers and other participants in the value chain in a pan-European group offers additional diversity and reduced commercial risks for all stakeholders. Moreover, they believe that the combined group will be very well positioned to play a leading role in the expected ongoing consolidation of automotive retailers in Europe.

We advised  Cigna on the sale of life-, accident- and supplemental benefits businesses to Chubb (NYSE: CB). The total value of the transaction was USD 5.75bn. Upon completion of the transaction, Chubb will acquire Cigna’s life-, accident- and supplemental benefits businesses in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand as well as Cigna’s 51% interest in a joint venture in Turkey. Cigna’s 51% interest in the Turkish joint venture is structured through a Dutch company whose share transfer is part of the worldwide proposed transaction. On 7 October 2021 definitive agreement was signed. The transaction is expected to be completed in 2022 and is subject to required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

We assisted EasyPark with the acquisition of the PARK NOW group. EasyPark is a strong and highly experienced international player  active in the field of digital parking services.
