Career

Jos van der Velden is a lawyer and partner at AKD who is a specialist in environmental law. He advises and represents government bodies and companies regarding planning and environmental law and nature protection procedures, such as zoning and integration plans, route decisions and environmental permits. Clients appreciate Jos because his years of experience and practical approach mean he can provide clear added value in complex projects. Engaging him at the earliest possible stage prevents problems and delays later on.

Jos is particularly specialised in infrastructural projects and noise nuisance problems. He has written a number of publications on these issues. He is the author of parts of the series entitled ‘Text & commentary’ [Tekst & Commentaar] on the Environmental and Planning Act [Omgevingswet]. He is also a member of the editorial team of the Environment & Law [Milieu & Recht] Journal. In addition he regularly teaches about environmental law and is a member of the board of the Dutch Association of Environmental Lawyers [Vereniging van Milieurecht-Advocaten] (VMA) and a member of the Environmental and Planning Act review council of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities [Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten] (VNG).

AKD‘s environment and planning team, which is formed of ‘highly qualified lawyers’, is well-equipped to advise on the gamut of complex matters ranging from high-value major developments and zoning plans to contentious and non-contentious environmental issues regarding such aspects as the shipment of waste. Its client list features names including the Minister of Infrastructure and Environment in the Netherlands. Breda-based Jos Van Der Velden oversees the team, alongside Hugo Doornhof, who works from the Amsterdam office, and Rotterdam-based Gerrit van der Veen , who is described as being ‘straight to the point, reliable and very competent’. The ‘unique and down-to-earth’ Thomas Sanders is also a name to note, as is Eveline Sillevis Smitt, who is particularly focused on major development and enforcement matters. Henk Breeman retired from the team in December 2022.
