Duarte Garin was Managing Partner of Uría Menéndez-Proença de Carvalho from 2001 to 2018; he is currently its Senior Partner. He joined Uría Menéndez as a partner in 2001. During that year, Uría Menéndez became the first foreign law firm to be authorised by the Lisbon Bar Association to open an office and offer legal services in Portugal.

He focuses his practice on real estate law and has worked on some of the most significant acquisitions and real estate transactions in Portugal.

With extensive experience across the entire spectrum of real estate mandates, Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho is skilled in M&A, financing transactions, and development of real estate projects. Bringing together cross-practice expertise, the team is particularly active in share deals and the sale and purchase of REO portfolios. Also noteworthy are its broad capabilities in insolvency matters involving real estate and tourism developers, and its proficiency in urban planning and environmental licensing issues. Duarte Garin is regularly retained to advise on transactions of mortgage-backed loan portfolios, while Rita Xavier de Brito is a name to note for acquisition finance and development matters. Both practitioners head the department, which also includes Francisco da Cunha Ferreira.
