Gábor Erdős, managing partner

Managing partner Gábor Erdős explains how Deloitte Legal Szarvas, Erdős and Partners Law Firm is adapting to clients' changing needs.

What do you see as the main points that differentiate Deloitte Legal Szarvas Erdős Partners Law Firm in Hungary from your competitors?

We have a presence globally, where our clients need us, with over 1,750 legal professionals in more than 75 countries.

  • Our Central European presence is unique; we serve 17 countries in the region, with more than 220 lawyers
  • We care as much about our clients’ long term success as we do for the short term outcome of a project.
  • We speak the language of the boardroom – business language, not just legalese.
  • What matters to us is to win great clients and to make an impact on their businesses.
  • Our services are interdisciplinary and holistic, covering all business issues by working together with Deloitte member firms’ tax, financial, cyber security and risk etc. advisors.
  • We have wide-ranging and in-depth experience and understanding of sectors, industries and markets.
  • We possess collective specialist knowledge on a network basis.

Which practices in your member firm do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Banking and finance – the Hungarian banking sector is recovering after the financial crisis and we expect that the financing market will be very active.

Real estate and construction – the Hungarian government adopted numerous decisions and legislation which will have a positive impact of the Hungarian real estate market. Our dedicated real estate team has the necessary expertise to handle the new demands.

M&A – we are very optimistic that the M&A market will be very active in 2016. Our legal services, combined with the advisory and tax services of Deloitte are valuable services in an M&A transaction differentiating Deloitte Legal from its competitors.

Pharma and healthcare – in 2016, a top-tier lawyer, Reka Berekmeri-Varro, will join Deloitte Legal in Hungary. Reka is regarded as a leading pharma expert by independent legal professional publications.

Tax litigation practice groups – we see significant potential in this group, with the 2016 addition of Mihaly Harcos, a top-tier tax litigation specialist, to the team at Deloitte Legal in Hungary.

What is the main change you have made in your firm that will benefit clients?

Mihaly Harcos, Partner Associate with Deloitte Legal in Hungary, leads the Tax Controversy Solutions group, which works closely with other Deloitte member firm tax professionals. It is this combination of legal, business, tax, and compliance knowledge that makes Deloitte Legal able to offer a cohesive perspective as well as insights upon which to make informed business decisions throughout the tax controversy cycle. Our proactive approach is designed to build a foundation upon which to base forward thinking tax controversy resolution strategies.

Reka Berekmeri-Varro, Partner Associate with Deloitte Legal in Hungary, specializes in regulatory matters related to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics and other consumer products. Reka advises several multinational companies on matters related to complex legal issues including clinical trials, licensing, advertising and promotion, distribution, pricing and reimbursement. Reka is recognized for her up-to-date knowledge and experience of pharmaceuticals regulations and advertising law, is the author of several professional publications, and regularly participates and presents at conferences.

How is technology changing the way you interact with your clients and the services you can provide them?

Digital natives are used to obtaining the information they need online – we see this increasingly also in our field of business. In addition to the substantial amount of information presented on our website – such as the International Dismissal Survey or the legal topics in the successful tax@hand app – we are now moving towards an interactive presentation of information about legal topics.

Increasingly, our clients want to understand and harness the power of state-of-the-art document analysis and document automation tools. We recognize that significant efficiencies can be achieved by carefully selecting appropriate tools that can address the specific challenges a client is facing.

Can you give us a practical example of how you helped a client add value to their business?

The banking sector is currently changing its service model and the banks are developing their online banking services and their digital presence. Our law firm advises banks regarding the legal and regulatory questions connected to digitization in the banking sector, and to their online presence and service offerings. Our legal teams work closely with Deloitte member firm tax and business advisors to provide legal advice which is harmonised with clients’ business objectives. This year we successfully advised Hungarian Banks in numerous projects connected to digitization of the banking sector.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three year's time?

In our view, multinational organizations need legal advisors who can assist with day-to-day activities as well as corporate life events across many jurisdictions. The Deloitte Legal network provides holistic guidance around strategic business decisions, offering cost-effective support for routine legal activities.

Deloitte Legal in Hungary is already on the path to become a top tier law firm in the fields of banking law, M&A, employment law and corporate law. Our practice has a strong reputation for helping clients address complex, cross-border issues. Deloitte Legal in Hungary consists of a team of highly experienced attorneys, well-known and respected specialists in their respective fields.

At Deloitte Legal in Hungary, we will achieve our ambitions for growth through investment in development and management of our talent.
