Michael Byrne is a partner in the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. Michael advises on public law, regulatory and administrative law disputes, as well as more general commercial litigation, with a particular emphasis on financial services litigation, defamation and product liability litigation.

Michael has written articles published in the national press and has contributed to publications, including the Practical Law Company Dispute Resolution Multi-Jurisdictional Guide and the International Comparative Guide to Product Liability.

Michael serves as Honorary Treasurer of the Commercial Litigation Association of Ireland.

Matheson LLP is highly active in the public sector, advising a range of public sector bodies on both contentious and non-contentious matters. The practice is particularly focused on the energy sector, where Garret Farrelly advises public sector clients on the procurement of energy projects. Elsewhere, Helen Kelly and Kate McKenna advise on compliance with competition and state aid laws, while Nicola Dunleavy SC defends clients in judicial review proceedings. Michael Byrne handles litigation and also advises clients on their powers and the impact of new legislation on their operations. Senior associate Aoiffe Moran is another name to note, advising on investigations, statutory interpretation and freedom of information law.

Matheson LLP‘s commercial litigation group is growing in prominence, thanks in part to the appointment of leading litigator, arbitration counsel and regulatory enforcement expert Nicola Dunleavy as Senior Counsel, one of few solicitors in Ireland to hold this status, and the elevation of Angela Brennan to partner. The group has a particular focus on technology disputes, financial services regulatory and investigations, insurance coverage cases, contentious insolvency and restructuring, and construction disputes. Tax cases are another forte for the firm. Julie Murphy-O’Connor is another senior member of the team, Karen Reynolds leads the regulatory investigations group and April McClements leads the insurance disputes group. Michael Byrne is noted for TMT disputes.

Practice co-head Ruth Hunter has more than 20 years’ experience in this space; she advises domestic and international clients on Irish productions, and also provides assistance with the financing of projects.
