Xavier is a member of the International Tax Services Practice Group and of the French Desk. He is also a former member of the Management Team of Loyens & Loeff Belgium (2012-2014).


Xavier has considerable experience in a broad range of international tax matters and Belgian domestic tax-related issues, in particular, in corporate tax issues including mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, transfer pricing, holding structures, structured finance, investment management and private equity.

Xavier also has experience in cross-border tax treaties and expat issues and gives particular focus to the relationship between Belgium and France. Furthermore, he advises on wealth optimisation techniques and inheritance planning, as well as on the fiscal consequences of immigration and emigration.

Xavier is a regular speaker at conferences. He is a lecturer at Université de Bourgogne – Centre de recherches fiscales in Dijon. He is a professor at the Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Fiscales de Bruxelles. Xavier has written extensively on tax-related subjects and contributed to many books and articles in the specialised press.

He is registered with the Brussels (Odre Français des Avocats) and Paris bars.

Xavier holds a Law degree from the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium, 1986). He also holds a special degree in business law from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium, 1987) and a special degree in tax law from Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Fiscales de Bruxelles (Belgium, 1993).

Loyens & Loeff‘s team provides standalone advice on the full range of domestic and international tax matters for clients in industries such as energy, real estate, retail, automotive and food and drink, among others. It also works closely with other departments, such as corporate, real estate, banking and finance, and employment. With this multidisciplinary approach the firm provides transactional support and also assists with state aid cases and corporate investigations. It also has a strong capability in the transfer pricing arena, where practice head Natalie Reypens leads a specialist group advising on transfer pricing policies, the set-up and conversion of business models, restructurings, profit allocation to permanent establishments and disputes. Xavier Clarebout is experienced in the tax aspects of corporate restructurings, M&A and structured finance transactions, among other areas. Saskia Lust and Nicolas Bertrand specialise in advising high-net-worth individuals and families on wealth optimisation techniques. Bertand was part of a cross-office team which assisted a client with the restructuring of its intragroup financing and treasury activities. Other key figures include Christian Chéruy, who leads the Belgian tax controversy and litigation group, Marc DhaeneBert Gevers and senior associate Aldo Engels.
