Gonçalo dos Reis Martins

Gonçalo is a partner in the Banking and Finance and Capital Markets practices. Over the last 15 years he has gained a comprehensive experience in advising leading international and domestic banks, other financial institutions and asset managers in debt capital markets, with a particular focus on structured finance, including securitisation of all asset classes, CDO’s CLO and equity linked notes, but also EMTN programmes, covered bonds, standalone Eurobonds and commercial paper. He has also a strong focus in derivatives and regulatory work for the asset management industry.
Gonçalo has also advised in important ECM transactions, such as take-overs, as well as several distressed debt transactions.
Before joining PLMJ he worked in another leading Portuguese law firm and a valuable international experience, having been seconded to the Capital Markets department of Simmons & Simmons and Morgan Stanley’s Legal Department (Fixed Income Division), both in London.
Gonçalo earned his Law degree by the Law School of Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 2002, where he also lectures. He is also entitled to practice under English law, being a member of the Law Society of England and Wales since 2007.

Specialising in complex finance transactions, restructuring, financial services regulation and debt issuances, the banking and finance team at PLMJ is also regularly instructed to advise on securitisations, portfolio acquisitions and consumer credit. Leading the department is Hugo Rosa Ferreira, whose areas of expertise include cross-border syndicated lending and structured finance transactions. André Figueiredo regularly works with financial advisors and credit facilitators, while Bruno Ferreira assists companies and credit institutions on finance and capital markets transactions. Often leading advice on cross-border transactions is Gonçalo dos Reis Martins, who has experience assisting international investment banks and funds.
Covering the full range of capital markets matters, the team at PLMJ provides legal support in relation to public and private offerings both in equity (namely IPOs, rights issues and takeovers) and debt. Areas of particular expertise also include structured and derivative products. Leading the practice is André Figueiredo, who has experience in cross-border financing operations involving high-yield bonds and preference share issues. Investment banks, funds and major companies seek Gonçalo dos Reis Martins‘ assistance in a variety of matters, namely takeovers and securitisations. Other noteworthy practitioners include Bruno Ferreira, who is proficient in distressed assets transactions, and recently promoted partner Raquel Azevedo, who focuses on capital markets transactions and has advised on the setting up of investment funds.
The ‘very amicable and accessible‘ team at PLMJ maintains a full-service practice and has recently been particularly active in corporate and M&A and litigation. The Mozambique desk comprises lawyers in the Lisbon, Faro and Porto offices, and works in close cooperation with local firm TTA – Sociedade de Advogados.
