Major transport infrastructure projects, both in Portugal and abroad, are a key strength of Inês Pinto da Costa‘s projects team at PLMJ. The practice handles project development, financing and related M&A on many of the country’s major railway and motorway projects, as well as the construction of airports and harbours. Recent instructions have also come from the energy and shipping industries, and the firm’s international coverage has been demonstrated by work covering China and Lusophone African jurisdictions, with practice head Pinto da Costa particularly active in the Angolan market in recent years. Diogo Perestrelo is an experienced projects lawyer, Diogo Duarte Campos is the name to note for construction law and Gonçalo dos Reis Martins has experience on the finance side. João Marques Mendes joined in July 2020.
PLMJ has a strong following among Portuguese listed companies, domestic and international financial institutions, which seek the team’s advice on the gamut of debt and equity capital markets deals. The group provides comprehensive legal services, covering takeovers, IPOs, corporate governance, derivatives and securitisation transactions. The latter is a core strength for co-head André Figueiredo, who is also seasoned in large public takeovers. Raquel Azevedo excels in both equity and debt transactions, and demonstrates further expertise in corporate governance. Gonçalo dos Reis Martins and Bruno Ferreira are also often involved in capital markets work.
PLMJ has an impressive track record in banking and finance, having been involved in some of the largest transactions in the country. Recent mandates included advising major Portuguese and international financial institutions on the sale and acquisition of high-value non-performing loan (NPL) and real estate owned (REO) portfolios. Also noteworthy is the team’s experience across structured finance, restructuring and cross-border syndicated lending. The department benefits from the expertise of Hugo Rosa Ferreira, who has over twenty years of experience in the banking and finance sector, and André Figueiredo, who has recently led advice on complex NPL disposals. Financial regulatory matters are a notable area of practice for co-managing partner Bruno Ferreira; Gonçalo dos Reis Martins is skilled in cross-border financing deals.
‘Detail oriented‘ with a ‘good grasp of the local laws and regulations‘, PLMJ provides a multi-disciplinary service to a diverse client base of international and domestic companies in Mozambique. Corporate and M&A expert Miguel Spínola heads the Mozambique desk, for which banking and finance has been a recent focus, Gonçalo dos Reis Martins being the key contact in that discipline for clients including BCI, ABSA and Standard Bank Moçambique. Managing associate Marta Pedro has strong experience in the country’s corporate, real estate and construction markets, and associate Neylla Gulamhussen also receives praise.
