Testimonials

‘Attention to detail, speed and quality of response. In-depth understanding and knowledge of the team. Ability to deliver clear and concise advice.’

‘Travers’ main strengths are the strong client relationship which it builds and invests in, the detailed knowledge of our business, technical excellence, a commercial approach and also continuity of personnel. In the commercial law space, the Travers team compares very favourably to other firms I have worked with. I would consider Travers’ commercial offering to be among the best in the London market.’

‘Primarily I have worked with Richard Brown (partner) and Michael Cuthbertson (senior associate). My experience with both has been excellent. Richard provides hands-on oversight of the matters and is always available to chat through any partner level issues that may arise. Richard has a wealth of experience and brings strong technical legal knowledge and a commercial approach to his advice. Michael has been responsible for the “heavy lifting” on recent matters – Michael is excellent technically and is highly responsive. I have also been impressed with Michael’s commercial understanding – he quickly grasped the key points for our business and tailored his advice accordingly.’

‘Ben Chivers (Partner) has always been on hand to help out with a variety of matters, often at short notice and often in complex/sensitive matters.’

‘I have always found the team at Travers to be very approachable and down to earth. This has really helped develop a strong relationship. In addition to this, the team have a great sense of humility which flows down from the partners, despite being experts in their field and from my perspective, this really sets them apart from other law firms I have worked with.’

‘Ben Chivers is a standout partner. Often I have approached Ben for advice, where other lawyers and firms have failed. He is both reliable and gives consistently good advice. It is rare to find a Partner who will advise to such a high standard, whilst remaining flexible and approachable.’

‘The team is always professional and helpful. They bring a sense of commercial and practical solutions to all legal challenges, ensuring an outcome that works in the best interest of all parties. The attention even from partner level on all aspects of our legal dealings makes a big difference, always makes you feel valued as a client.’

‘Commercial advice from Travers is consistently of a high standard. For in-house lawyers, their practice provides vital flexibility and responsive team members. Where other firms are rigid with cost options and collaborative working, Travers will provide that rare quality of working with lawyers in-house to create an extension of the internal team and are always flexible when it comes to fees. They understand the in-house lawyers’ role and the challenges they face and handle them deftly.’

Testimonials

‘Andrew Gillen was exactly the right amount of hard but reasonable negotiator we required against a tough seller’s counsel. We were very impressed at how pragmatic the advice was to get to the execution of the deal.’

‘Ben Lowen was very approachable and always available for counsel. He ensured that every box was ticked and I never had to chase on issues.’

‘Adrian West was outstanding on the project, with a calm, clear head at all times. He gives pragmatic, sensible advice and is very experienced.’

‘They understood the needs of the company and stakeholders, were extremely experience and competent. We had to complete the transaction within two months and they response time was outstanding which is key for M&A.’

‘The team led by Andrew Gillen and Ben Lowen made the transaction very user friendly for us, taking on the tough negotiations. The team were right there when we needed them, fully up to speed and ready to give their advice in a timely manner. We were introduced to other specialists, like tax, from the very beginning and they didn’t wait for problems to arise before getting the advice in. All their advice was incredibly straightforward and very easy to understand. They found solutions for us when the deal structure didn’t pan out exactly as we thought.’

‘Ben Lowen was excellent and showed great resilience in dealing with changing timetables and issues as they arose.’

‘Probably Travers’ best point was that the team are so personable, they felt like part of our in-house team by the end of the deal. They were brilliant to work with and I couldn’t speak more highly of them. I would instruct them again and recommend them to others. ‘

‘They deliver consistently excellent work – they’re rigorous and all over the detail but equally able to step back and take a commercial view of what’s needed in a particular situation.  They are our “go to” firm for corporate transactions.’

‘Ian Keefe and Lucie Cawood were a highly efficient double act, allowing them to scale and cover a lot of ground quickly and in an agile manner. They are particularly strong communicators, they don’t get emotional about points and focused on the overall goal of agreeing a deal that worked for us and the other side. ‘Highly personable. Highly commercial. Numerate. High standards of technical lawyering. Very good value for money. Relationship-driven.’

‘What I like about the Travers team is that they are joined up, thoughtful and focus on what’s important. More than that, when you work with them their attention to you is so high that you wonder if you are their only client. Testimonials

‘What I value the most about the team is that they make you feel like they really care about you as their client and think carefully about your best interests. They engage as a team and work very closely together. Their work is exceptional and their solid advice is based on reliable analysis.

‘You always know who is working on your case and they are all visible and engaged. It is nothing like in some of the other firms where the most senior partner only turns up at the beginning of the relationship but leaves as soon as you have signed the engagement letter and you never see him again.

‘They never give you advice unless it is based on thorough analysis and careful thinking, where everything has been taken into account. They do not just tell you what they think you want to hear but offer their advice on how they think your position really is, and what options you have. They also outline the pros and cons of each of your options. That makes it easier for you, as a client, to make a decision based on the advice you are receiving’.

He’s an incredibly experienced commercial litigator; clients love him; he’s an excellent lawyer, and he invariably produces outstanding results for clients. Jarrai Jawara: an outstanding associate, and a total superstar of the future. Top quality.’

Travers occupies its own, distinctive space at the premium end of the commercial dispute resolution sector. The firm has a strong, winning personality, expressed through a really excellent, cohesive team of passionate, dedicated lawyers, battle-hardened from some of the biggest, longest commercial fights in recent years. They are some of the very best people to be in the trenches with.

What I value the most about the team is that they make you feel like they really care about you as their client and think carefully about your best interests. They engage as a team and work very closely together. Their work is exceptional and their advice is based on reliable analysis. You always know who is working on your case and they are all visible and engaged. It is nothing like in some of the other firms where the most senior partner only turns up at the beginning of the relationship but leaves as soon as you have signed the engagement letter and you never see him again.

Travers Smith’s disputes practice is outstanding. They can handle the toughest disputes, have really grown from strength to strength, and have been involved in some of the leading cases. Their lawyers are very clever, very hard-working and hugely collaborative. They are also very nice people and a pleasure to work with.

Jan-Jaap Baer: a seriously first-class litigator. Charming and understated in person, he’s fiercely intelligent and strategic, and devotes extraordinary energy to winning his clients’ cases. Huw Jenkin:  passionate, experienced, and incisive – a superb lawyer and a joy to work with.

Stephanie Lee, partner: a real star. She’s effortlessly on top of the detail, extremely smart, and imperturbable in even the fiercest fight. Andrew King, partner: vastly experienced and cuts straight to the chase. A real master at handling difficult cases (and clients). Rob Fell: a superb leader of his world-class team. Has very well-honed instincts and is always deeply reassuring to have on your side. Polly Richard: the least surprising partner pick since Steph Lee, a serious future star. Toby Robinson, partner: diligent, determined and with huge reserves of energy.

Our approach to diversity and creating an inclusive workplace goes beyond just ticking a box. We want everyone to be themselves at Travers Smith. We value everything that makes us unique and we recognise that celebrating our differences helps make the firm a special place to work.

From initiatives aimed at reducing biases and tackling micro-aggressions, to the wide-ranging and exciting work of our diversity network groups, we have an extensive D&I programme aimed at creating a workplace where people can thrive and reach their full potential. Below is a selection of projects we delivered in 2020-21

1. A focus on allyship

Allies, or people who are proactive and understanding of the challenges affecting diverse groups of people, can be instrumental in driving positive cultural change. It is not the responsibility of people from minority groups to create a fairer society but rather that task sits on the shoulders of allies and people in positions of influence. Building upon this framework of engaging with the majority to help drive positive change for the minority and/or underrepresented, we have developed resources aimed at educating and empowering our people to be effective allies.

2. Building an anti-racism workplace

It is no longer enough for individuals to say they are not racist; we all need to be proactively anti-racist. As part of our wider work in tackling racial inequality, we continue to run our ‘Empowering our Allies: How do we be Anti-Racist?’ series for all partners and members of staff. These interactive sessions discussed the importance of being anti-racist, how we can all be anti-racist, and what this looks like in our day-to-day and working lives.

3. Intersectionality: celebrating difference

By looking at our D&I initiatives through an intersectional lens, we are able to better examine the role people’s multiple identities have in compounding inequality and discrimination, and to develop mechanisms to better promote inclusion. Some ways we have achieved this are:

  • D&I Seminar programme: We programmed a series of seminars, events and podcasts involving speakers from as diverse backgrounds as possible to help provide an insight into the diverse experiences of people from minority and under-represented groups.
  • D&I book club: We have recently launched a quarterly D&I-themed book club that is open to anyone across the firm. this book club will provide people with an opportunity to discuss the chosen text, as well as explore its associated themes.

The Lex 100 Verdict

Travers Smith LLP is a Lex 100 Winner in an incredibly impressive eleven categories. The City firm provides trainees with a wide array of sectors, practice areas and seat choices; it is described as a ‘close-knit’ and ‘supportive’ firm, with ‘friendly and talented people, unrivalled training and exceptional quality of work’. Current trainees rate the firm’s ‘real and genuine effort in relation to CSR and pro-bono’ and the training system. The ‘room-sharing system' is praised repeatedly by trainees for its ‘osmosis’ learning potential and for encouraging of the ‘collegiate’ atmosphere. During the pandemic the firm worked very hard to keep this up; as one trainee appreciated: ‘I feel really included and part of the team which has been helped by the firm making a real effort to do a mix of casual catch ups a few times a week alongside more organised evening events where you get hampers posted to your home and do activities or play games’. Negatives include the associate pay scale, long hours during busy times and that more could be done on diversity at senior levels, yet the comments are abundantly positive. Travers Smith’s reputation as an exceptional place to train continues, offering trainees a richly rewarding experience.
