{"id":89678,"date":"2023-04-17T13:27:10","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T13:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legal500.com\/events\/?post_type=event_report&#038;p=89678"},"modified":"2023-04-18T09:57:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T09:57:49","slug":"gc-summit-south-korea-2023","status":"publish","type":"event_report","link":"https:\/\/my.legal500.com\/events\/report\/gc-summit-south-korea-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"GC Summit South Korea 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">With the historic Hwanggungu\u00a0shrine as the backdrop\u00a0and the room immaculately lit in the midday sun, the ballroom at the Westin Josun\u00a0Seoul Hotel began receiving guests for The Legal 500\u2019s first-ever South Korea GC Summit, a long-overdue venture given the huge significance of the Republic of Korea\u2019s economy,\u00a0legal scene\u00a0and global business reach.<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Along with our event partners, we were delighted to welcome over 100 GCs and in-house lawyers. A wide group was in attendance, representing\u00a0the large corporations that are global household names, to smaller startup companies,\u00a0and everything in between; a truly representative gathering\u00a0that highlighted the diverse and vibrant talent pool that makes up the Korean in-house legal ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">After welcoming the guests, master of ceremonies\u00a0Joe Boswell of The Legal 500 introduced our keynote speaker\u00a0Jinny Suh of McKinsey and company who outlined some of the key themes affecting Korean in-house counsel\u00a0in her charismatic style.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">We then moved on to our first panel discussion, in association with Greenberg Traurig. Focusing on M&amp;A in Korea, panellists\u00a0Jang Hyuk Yeo (partner, Greenberg Traurig), Hyewon\u00a0Lee (associate, Greenberg Traurig), Roger S. Chae (group general counsel, global legal compliance &amp; audit, Hanon Systems) and In Kim (Counsel, overseas legal affairs department, Korea Investment &amp; Securities Company)\u00a0gave an expertly-crafted\u00a0overview of the inbound and outbound M&amp;A opportunities and challenges to Korean entities.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Our second panel was another excellent discussion alongside Herbert Smith Freehills. Taking advantage of the vast experience of moderator Mike McClure KC\u00a0(Head of Seoul, Foreign Legal Consultant, Herbert Smith Freehills)\u00a0in the area at hand, this panel delved into the highly complex\u00a0world of arbitration. Dana Kim (Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills), Dr. Peter Ruttman (General counsel, BMW Korea)\u00a0and Tigran Ter-Martirosyan\u00a0(Director, Accuracy)\u00a0gave the audience the benefit of their diverse perspectives before the audience got involved in a robust Q&amp;A session.<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">After a coffee break, we returned for our third panel session alongside Lee &amp; Ko. Titled\u00a0\u2018Recent developments and uniqueness in Korean competition law\u2019,\u00a0the panel proceeded\u00a0to interrogate the topic at length, providing the audience with both practical advice and a detailed discussion. A highly diverse panel appeared for this section: Hwan Jeong of Lee &amp; Ko, Ui Jae Lee of Veolia, Jong Youn Han of Lee &amp; Ko, YounGyu\u00a0Lee of Chubb Life and Minwoo Chae of Starbucks.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The next session changed the pace somewhat, with a shorter \u2018fireside chat\u2019 format focused on the always popular\u00a0topic of litigation. Moderated by Joe Boswell, the brave host was joined on stage by two formidably qualified individuals. From the in-house side, Citi\u2019s Korea general counsel Hyo-Yeon Yoon and from the private practice side, Greenberg Traurig\u2019s overall vice-chair and chair of both the Litigation Practice in New York and the Business &amp; Regulatory Financial Services Litigation Group\u00a0Richard Edlin; someone who needs no introduction to those familiar with\u00a0the litigation world. Taking advantage of both\u00a0of their perspectives, a highly interesting discussion ensued about how best to set up for an\u00a0impending litigation, with practical insights included at all points. Edlin also treated the audience to some of the war stories he has amassed over the course of his stellar career.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Our fourth and final panel discussion was in association with Yulchon, and featured another impressive panel: Doil Son (Head of the IP &amp; Technology Practice, Sun Hee\u00a0Kim (Partner) and Jungwoo Lee<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">(Partner), all of\u00a0Yulchon. Taking a deep dive into a topic that had already featured prominently in audience questions, AI and data, the panel managed to tackle the issue broadly and also place it in a more specific context, that of HR management.\u00a0The audience responded extremely positively to this unique session and many interesting questions resulted during the Q&amp;A portion.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">From here, the audience was invited to enjoy refreshments and Canap\u00e9s as the conversation continued in the dedicated networking session that Legal 500 events have become renowned for.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The GC Summit Korea was a huge success\u00a0that surpassed the high expectations\u00a0we had,\u00a0both in terms of\u00a0the quality of the discussions and the calibre\u00a0of GCs who attended. We will return next year, when we will take on the challenging but welcome task of surpassing the already high-water mark that this event has made.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">In the meantime, we hope to have at least one more event in South Korea this year, so please keep an eye out for updates.
