Tunisia’s transition into becoming a fully-fledged democracy following the Arab Spring has been relatively successful, particularly when compared with neighbouring states. Although its economic performance was stagnant in 2015 and 2016, with growth hovering at circa 1%, it picked up to 2.3% in 2017 (with recoveries in the agricultural sector and export-led industries, such as textiles, being notable). Notwithstanding this, there are still concerns about delays by the national unity government in implementing key structural reforms, which are needed to accelerate growth further. In addition, an investment law that was passed in 2016, and was intended to incentivise foreign investment in Tunisia, has yet to lead to a major uptick in corporate and M&A deal activity.

The legal market in Tunisia is dominated by firms such as Adly Bellagha & Associates, Cabinet Donia Hedda Ellouze, Ferchiou & associés, Jurismed and Meziou Knani & associés. Eversheds El Heni (a member of Eversheds Sutherland) is another active player in the market. Global Lawyers North Africa in partnership with Gide Loyrette Nouel also has a first-rate reputation in the market. As part of its strategy to expand across Africa, DLA Piper added Tunis-based firm El Ajeri Lawyers to its network by way of a cooperation arrangement in July 2017.
