A leading firm in the area’, Baker McKenzie is well-known for handling complex copyright disputes and regulatory matters. It is advising a global corporation on copyright negotiations connected to the provision of services and applicable tariffs. José María Méndez, Carles Prat and Cristina Duch are recommended.

Bird & Bird’s ‘top-notch copyright team’, which is led by the ‘reputedManuel Lobato, was recently strengthened by the addition of Antonio Cueto, who joined from Gómez-Acebo & Pombo. Raul Bercovitz led a team representing Mediapro, as the claimant, in a dispute against a pirate website pertaining to infringement of intellectual property rights and unfair competition. Clifford Chance’s team has extensive expertise acting for clients in enforcing IP rights under copyright legislation. The ‘impressive’ Miquel Montañá, who heads the practice, led advice to Banco Santander on multiple project finance operations for the production of several films and television series with an approximate value totalling €20m. Other work included successfully representing Ciber, as the respondent, in a dispute pertaining to the client’s implementation of enterprise resources planning software. Recently appointed partner Josep Montefusco and senior associate Juan Cuerva de Cañas are also noted.

A top practice for copyright matters’, Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s ‘impressive’ team is ‘very attentive to details and client’s business needs’. The group assists Nike with all commercial and IP issues including online marketing and e-commerce and advises Sony on the negotiation of contracts regulating its films interests with local distributors. Eduardo Castillo leads the practice. Jesús Muñoz Delgado, Sofía Martínez and Ibán Diez are other key contacts.

Uría Menéndez’s team is representing a household-name media corporation in litigation concerning the ownership, licensing and infringement of a television series format. Clients include Telefónica, Microsoft and Sony Mobile. Montiano Monteagudo leads the practice.

Cuatrecasas’ team was strengthened by the arrival of Álvaro Bourkaib from Uría Menéndez; he jointly heads the team with Albert Agustinoy. Highlights included advising Ibex 35-company Merlin Properties, on its rights over iconic building Torre Agbar (now Torre Glories) in Barcelona, which concerns rights over the building as a work of art and the legal implications of the use of its image as a commercially valuable product. Elzaburu handles copyright disputes for leading corporations drawn from a variety of industries. Clients include El Corte Inglés, McDonald’s, Swarovski, Ikea and Mapfre. Practice head Antonio Castán, Enrique Armijo, Carlos Morán and Colm Ahern are the names to note.

At Garrigues, practice head Carolina Pina is defending Spotify against claims filed alleging failure to pay royalties for online phonograms. João Miranda de Sousa and Antonio Muñoz are also noted.

Boutique firm Grau & Angulo has notable expertise in IP litigation and has a wide and diverse client portfolio. Highlights included handling a copyright infringement pertaining to television channels. Practice head Jorge Grau, Ignacio Marqués, Guillem Villaescusa and Paula Gutiérrez are key names.

Hogan Lovells International LLP is defending CeramTec in proceedings initiated by Doceram for the alleged infringement of the copyright of its blue Cerazur ceramic pins for welding machines. Burkhart Goebel, Ana Castedo and Constanze Schulte are the key names.

Highlights for Abril Abogados, SL’ team included representing educational corporation Kumon in a claim against a former franchisee that imitated the client’s registered methodology and know-how. Rubén Canales leads the team.

ECIJA acts for media multinationals and small start-ups. Founding partner Hugo Écija and Alejandro Touriño are the key names.

Hoyng Rokh Monegier has expertise in cross-border IP litigation, where it is able to draw on the firm’s international network of offices. Luis Fernández Novoa, Álvaro Velázquez and José Antonio Sanmartín are the names to note.

Sol Muntañola & Asociados is recognised for its specialised advice on copyright instructions. Mario Sol Muntañola and Francisco Javier Márquez lead the team.

CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo has strengthened its practice in this area following its global merger with Olswang LLP.
