Clifford Chance’s practice assists creditors, investors, charterers, transport companies and borrowing consortia with contentious as well as non-contentious ship finance matters, and on the aviation front, the group is advising lenders, leasing companies, investment managers and arrangers on matters ranging from leasing and financing transactions to investment agreements, disposals, restructurings, repossessions and dispute resolution. Practice head Simon Briscoe led a team advising GE Capital Aviation Services on AirAsia Group’s acquisition of five A320 Neo aircraft, while Gervais Green assisted CSSC Leasing with the financing for the first two FSRU vessels to be built in China. Green also advised Yinson Production on the conversion of a $780m syndicated loan to an Islamic term financing facility. Kate Sherrard is also recommended.

Noted for its ability to ‘work well under tight timescales’, Norton Rose Fulbright’s team advises clients on transactions throughout the region, with an emphasis on the energy transportation sector and insolvency and restructuring matters. Head of aviation Keith Sandilands is assisting CCB Financial Leasing with the acquisition of a portfolio of eight aircraft on lease to Thomas Cook Airlines, Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines from GE Capital Aviation Services. Sandilands, supported by of counsel James Bradley, advised Malaysia Airlines on the leasing of six A350-900 aircraft from Air Lease Corporation. Shipping head Ben Rose advised Standard Chartered Bank on a $1.2bn syndicated financing of the Armada Olombendo FPSO. Crédit Agricole, Investec Bank, Westpac and BNP Paribas are also clients.

Stephenson Harwood LLP’s team regularly acts for international investment banks as well as commodity, shipping and offshore companies on multi-jurisdictional shipping financing restructuring transactions. On the aviation front, the group assists lenders, lessors and airlines with a wide range of financing deals, frequently with an international element. Gregg Johnston, who heads the shipping and offshore finance department, acted alongside Martin Green for a syndicate of lenders on issues arising from the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping, which involved five separate syndicated loan agreements and several bilateral transactions pertaining to 31 vessels. Huay Yee Kwan handled a $1.35bn sale and leaseback transaction for Bank of Communications Financial Leasing. Aviation finance expert Saugata Mukherjee assisted Deucalion and CLSA Capital Partners with the acquisition and financing of two B787-800 aircraft on lease to Qatar Airways. Iain Young is another name to note.

Watson Farley & Williams LLP’s team counts ABN AMRO, Bank of America, Macquarie Bank, Golar LNG and Credit Suisse among its clients, and handles a wide range of matters, including acquisitions, leases, joint ventures and financings. The team handled the acquisition of thirty five B373 MAX aircraft from Boeing Company for Malaysia Airlines. Simon Petch is advising the Singapore branch of DVB Bank as facility agent on the financing of six bulk carriers to IVS Bulk. Andrew Nimmo led a team assisting Sapura Energy as part of a joint venture with Seadrill on $780m of multi-tranche facilities to finance three pipelay support vessels. Practice head Mei Lin Goh advised Reliance on the $573m financing of the construction of six ethane carrier vessels, consisting of a Korea Trade Insurance Corporate. Bank of America is also a client. Mehraab Nazir and Shawn Er are also recommended. Siva Subramaniam and Samuel Kolehmainen have joined Herbert Smith Freehills.

Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP’s groups garners praise for providing ‘great local market knowledge, practical commercial responses and understanding of client needs’. On the aviation front, the group focuses on acting for lessors in aviation sector, while on the shipping side it handles structured financing transactions and acts for several banks. Simon Spells assisted Aerdragon Aviation Partners with the delivery, financing and leasing of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Shandong Airlines via Aerdragon’s Tianjin Free Trade Zone company. Avolon Aerospace Leasing, Avation, Deutsche Bank, ICBC Financial Leasing and Total Engine Asset Management are other aviation clients, while DVB Bank, DekaBank, CSBC Corporation and Standard Chartered Bank instruct the firm on shipping mandates.

Hogan Lovells Lee & Lee’s strong aviation practice handles a range of transactions for lenders, airlines and banks. Team leader Alexander McMyn led for Stellar Aircraft Holding 1 on the repossession and export of an Airbus A330 aircraft from Transasia Airways Corporation, following the latter’s bankruptcy and dissolution. McMyn also advised Standard Chartered Bank on Pembroke Group’s leasing of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft to HG Aviation, and assisted BOC Aviation with the lease restructuring and subsequent sale to Bank of America of three Airbus aircraft on lease to Bangkok Airways. Matthew Leigh joined from Norton Rose Fulbright and counsel Ling Lui left to join HFW Singapore LLP.

Bird & Bird ATMD LLP’s ‘knowledgeable and responsive’ team assists aviation clients with a wide variety of corporate transactions including acquisitions, financing and novations. Practice head Leo Fattorini, praised for his ‘wealth of industry knowledge’, delivers ‘timely and commercial advice in fast-paced transactions’. Fattorini is acting for Asia Aviation Capital in the sale and leaseback of five new Airbus A320 NEO aircraft with GECAS and advised new client InterGlobe Aviation on the sale and leaseback of six new Airbus 320 NEO aircraft with CMB Financial Leasing. The group also assisted Avation with the sale and leaseback of six new Airbus A321 to VietJet and supported DCAL 3 Leasing as the head lessor in the subleasing and leasing amendment transaction to an airline in Korea.

Although HFW Singapore LLP’s department primarily acts for lessors, it also advises a number of operators. ‘Sharp, quick on his feet and clear in his communication’ practice head David Brotherton ‘strikes a good balance of knowledge and commercial acumen’; he advised Avolon Aerospace Leasing on the leasing and financing of B787-9 aircraft on lease to Hainan. Leigh Borello, who splits his time between Sydney and Singapore, assisted Minsheng Financial Leasing with the financing of two Airbus 380 aircraft for Asiana Airlines. Other highlights included advising Bank of Communication Financial Leasing on the refinancing of an Airbus A330-300 on lease to Garuda Indonesia and assisting Avation with the financing of two airbus A321 leased to VietJet. Counsel Ling Lui joined from Hogan Lovells Lee & Lee.

Aviation expert Paul Ng heads Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP’s practice, which specialises in structured and receivables financings. It assists major lenders as well as borrowers and arrangers with financing and leasing transactions in the aviation sector. Past work highlights included advising VietJet on the $3.58bn financing of 215 aircraft engines from CFM and assisting Minsheng Financial Leasing with pre-delivery payment financing provided to Korean Air.
